Well, after about 10 years, I've finally got my hands on a copy of UW1 (having played UW2 almost all the way through lovingly about 10 years ago) and I'm getting stuck. In fact, I was attacking this very same room with the two levers and buttons. I've figured out how the machinery affects the puzzle, but I just can't seem to get into the hidden entrance in the SE of the room. I think I've raised the platforms to the right height, but my jumps just can't land there. I even have a ring of Leaping to help out. Any hints on how to land in that passage? Or am I approaching it the wrong way?

It's possible that you have the platforms too high. If you raise them too far you'll bump your head on the ceiling when you try to jump to the exit, and fall.

Yes - it's been a long time, but if I remember correctly you had to remove the ring of leaping before attempting the jump. Just go to the edge of the platform by using slow forward with the mouse and then use shift+J to jump through into the hidden passage.

Thanks for the help. In the end, I used the potion of Fly that I got from Ironwit. I remember jumps being tricky in UW2, but I don't remember any that were as hard to target as that one. Amazing, considering how much the technology has improved since then.
