Oh well, this may be a stupid question. Just bought UW 1+2 on Ebay and thought I might ask: Is there any way to get UW running under Windows? A project where something like this is done? Something like Exult for U7?

Oh well. I searched the web for a while now. Looks like I have to find another way to get it running: Could somebody explain, how to set up games under W2K in a Dos-Box? I havent bothered to do something like that and therefore have no clue what to do. The Hardware I use: a Soundblaster Live Card with the standard Windows Drivers and a USB mouse (MS Intellieye). If somebody could write down what to so that a dummy like myself can understand it, I would appreciate it. (Would be kinda cool to play both games again after how many years? 6? 7?....)
Thanks,

I'd make a bootdisk if I were you. If you need any help with this let us know.

Bootdisc sounds okay. The problems I am going to have are with the Soundblaster Live and the USB Mouse. Is the mouse actually running under DOS? What kind of drivers do I need for the mouse and the soundblaster?

I use a boot-disk and I am successfully using a USB optical mouse and a SB-Live card in pure dos. Id be happy to send you a copy of the the generic driver that I use for my mouse to you if your interested.

Since you've got a SB-live your in luck. Its comes with DOS drivers for SB-16 emulation, as well as emulating around 4 other cards. Check to see whether its installed in your creative directory. Presuming that you installed your SB-Live with a default path to your C: drive, then your dos files would most likely be found here:

C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\DOSDrv
If they arent there then you will have to run your installation program again, this time doing a custom install and only installing the DOS drivers. You will then need to go into Systems' Properties/device manager and check to see whether the Legacy Device is working properly.

When you've got this sorted out, drop by here for more info on getting it to work in DOS

Hi all.
Thanks for the answers. Twistys posting sounds promising, especially the part with the generic drivers for my USB mouse. I would be thankful if you could e-mail them to me. As for the Sounblaster: I guess I have to install liveware for Win2K or Win98 in order to use the Legacy drivers? Looks like I have to dl liveware then. I use Win98 and Win2k (for developing purposes) - I guess I have to do this under W98 since W2k does not allow direct hardware access, although I have a tool which might to that (Sound FX 2000).
It would be cool if you could write how to set up the environment for the DOS box or what to do with the autoexec / config.sys files. It has been so long ago that I did it for the last time that I have forgotten almost everything...
Thanks,

Cool, since youve got a dual boot with W98 then you already have himem.sys and emm386.exe available. As far as your SB-Live is concerned, the dos-drivers dont come with Live-ware so its a waste of time for you to download them. In fact Im not even sure if Creative bother to have the dos drivers available for download. It should be on your original installation disk though. Please search your CD and if not found Ill send you a copy of mine.

Ill send you the mouse drivers today as well as a copy of my Autoexec.bat and config.sys files as well as a readme.txt file. You might have to customise them a little depending on how things are set up on your PC, but Ill provide instructions in the readme.txt.

It may be interesting for most of people trying to play UW nowadays if you write them down here...

Sure, Im actually working on making a FAQ/tutorial for getting UW to work on a variety of machines and OS. Ill post this up at Stygian-Abyss when its ready. I feel its about time that we had a resource available for people so that they can easily play this game in its full glory. The first part will concentrate on making a boot-disk and Ill add a section on getting it to work in windows later.
