I assume everyone here already has Ultima Underworld... but if you want friends to have it, you might tell them that the December 2000 issue of Computer Gaming World includes the entire game (of UW #1) on its CD ROM. Not sure why they decided to include it, but its there.
I have never played any of the Ultimas and so now I'm gonna give this one a go. Problem is: the game runs fine on my Win98 system (without going to DOS mode) but I can't get any sound. There is a DOS utility included that is meant to install the sound drivers, but it returns a message saying no sound card is detected.
And the game seems sadly dull without sound. Any ideas?

PC Gamer also offered it on their July 2000 CD as part of their "Classic Games Collection". Apparently the game will only work if your system is configured for expanded memory in MS-DOS (Check Properties then Memory; if the pull-down option reads "Auto", the game should run). Like most early DOS games, I get the MIDI music but no dialogue. Does this have something to do with the legacy support of my sound card or did some of these games simply have only on-screen printed dialogue?
My biggest complaint is the lack of documentation. Call me spoiled my more recent games, but I love a good detailed Instruction Manual. Does anyone out there have a quick set of instructions for Load and Save and Escape? It would be most appreciated.

What other games were on that CD ROM? I might be interested in ordering it if its still available.

Two messages
First, a really large thank-you to PraetorJudis for the link to the manuals. It's just what I was looking for. Let me know if I can return the favor sometime.
Second, to GnuB: the disc had games like "Duke Nukem II", "The Secret of Monkey Island", "X-COM: UFO Defense", as well as other, perhaps less familiar, stuff. It would be nice if PCGamer made it a regular feature, getting readers to vote on some of their favorites. I'd like to see the original "Prince of Persia" (and "POP2") or "Simon the Sorcerer" (and "Simon2").
There's a website here:http://www.classicgaming.com/ that's fun to explore. Currently reading some of their info about emulators and classic arcade games; they also include downloads for MAME (the arcade emulator) and the ROM's of the games. From what I've read so far, MAME acts like DarkLoader, unzipping ROM's from a "rom" folder and running arcade games on the PC. Some truly amazing stuff out there!

GnuB
sorry for the non-linked link. I'll try it again and if it doesn't work, I'll go back to HTML kindergarten
