Good evening. I recently got UW1 off the pcgamer cd and I was wondering roughly what level my fighter should be at to take on the monster in the mine. Thank you, suave, sophisticated person who is helping me now.
PS: I can't believe that this game got glossed over, the way it did when it was released close to Wolf 3d! Revolutionary graphics and level structure for it's time, plus tons of detail and depth in the setting, and all we get to hear from the gaming media is the bs about Id being pioneers!
Don't get distracted by that last bit, I'd really like to know how tough and well-equipped I have to be to defeat that bloody eye-tentacle thing.

Oh geez. That damn gazer in the mines is horrid to fight! I don't have a specific answer for you, but you don't
need to get into the mine areas for a few levels yet (you'll come back to Shak, bay-bee), so I would recommend clearing out the rest of level 2, and all of level 3. Then come back and try it again. I personally recommend getting up close and personal while fighting it as it's range attacks are far more devastating than it's claw attacks.
Do you have the manuals and map and such? If not, feel free to grab them off of my site:

I usually can kill it no problem now (I typically come back to the mines after finding certain items that need Shak's attention), but the first time I played the game (ten years ago) it took me dying and reloading about 15 times before I managed it...
*grin* I am better at games now than I was then though. I should load it up tonight and buzz through to the mines and see how I do!

Thanks! I recently downloaded those manuals through that thread you were on earlier, Praetor. I haven't had time to read it all through, but it looks to be pretty helpfull stuff. By the way, I noticed that the PC Gamer cd I got UW off says "volume one". Since I live in Australia, I got the July issue in early August via 'roo mail. Have any of you people got the August issue, and, if so, is there a second volume of this brilliance?

The September issue is out, and no more classic games... yet. I don't think they've said exactly when Vol. 2 will be out, or even for certain that it will be.
