I haven't played UW in a long time, but I remember, in the enemies/monsters section of the manual, it described a "shadow beast" which could not be seen. If you are damaged and cannot see where it is coming from, "suspect the shadow beast, and strike in all directions!".
My question is, was there ever an actual enemy you couldn't see in UW? I was rather young when first playing it, and the possibility of an enemy I couldn't see scared the bejesus out of me. Now that I think about it, though, I wouldn't be surprised to find that it wasn't an actual enemy, just something put in the manual as a mind-game type of thing. It wouldn't surprise me...
Does anyone know if there was an actual Shadow Beast?

Yop. There are at least two in the game. They look a bit like ghosts, but they're black, and they have legs and don't float. One is in the dwarven graveyard on level seven, and another is in the Key of Courage room on level 3.

The shadow beast was Bad News all right. It could never be seen distinctly, only in outline and transparent at that, but it also faded in and out of view so at times it was totally invisible. It was damn tough too.

OMG, that phrase just smacked my memory. I only completed the game once, but now I remember that weird outliney thing attacking me! After ascending through every level in the series of small areas... yeah...
I don't recall the dwarven graveyard, but I didn't exactly explore the lowest three levels thoroughly, I was too scared (I was 10 or so, give me a break :)).

That was one part of the game that was truly scary. <IMG SRC="wot.gif" border="0"> :D
