Hi Everyone,
I've been playing UU1 recently with Adlib sounds, and everythings been great. I thought I'd play around with my sound settings and found I could play using Roland MT32, which had much better music, but the sound effects sounded like midi instruments (footsteps sound like piano chords etc). I'd much rather play using Roland MT32 cause the music, but cant figure out how to have normal sounds. I have a SB Live, and it sounds the same in Win98 and DOS.
I'd appreciate any help :)
Cheers

IMO, the music is not better on Roland MT32.. It's in fact, worse.
Well, worse considering that's not how it was intended to sound...
Anyway, the music and sound effects go hand and hand, I doubt theres anyway to fix that problem..

That is the first time I've heard music from an MT32 described as being poorer than an Adlib sound card!
When Underworld was written, it wasn't too unusual to have a Roland LAPC-1 installed for music and a SoundBlaster installed for digital effects. By using a combination of the underworld install program and the uwsound.exe program it was possible to configure the music and sound devices separately.
Unfortunately, I haven't got a SoundBlaster live - only an ageing SoundBlaster AWE-32 hooked up to an MT-32, but I have found that using VDMS gives a decent sound reproduction and certainly sounds better than using the adlib sound driver.
BTW - Trivia: In the dim and distant past there were two versions of the Underworld .xmi music files. One was optimised for the Adlib sound card, another was optimised for the Roland MT32 / LAPC-1.

I'm not saying it's bad, but.. I personally (hence the "IMO" last time) prefer Sound Blaster to take care of it.
It sounds much more natural to me, and it seems like that's how it was (more or less) intended to sound.
To each their own though.
