Recently reinstalled Ultima Underworld I (The Stygian Abyss,) onto my new system and have run into a problem. Whenever I use the <shift> key with another key my system locks up hard. I can "sortof" work around it by using the <caps lock> key instead, but that is a real bother. I had this problem once before and fixed it by changing the MIDI device loaded with my DOS-Enabler on my AWE-64 card. However, I now have an Audigy and it uses an emulator instead of an enabler. This emulator does not allow me to change the MIDI device. I do not have this problem if I turn off the sound, but I do not want to do that if I can get out of it. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

You may be better off running UW in the pc emulator (
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox) dosbox if your computer is new.
You'll be limited to adlib music & sound effects, but it's better than nothing and the emulation speed is adjustable as well (so you'd avoid the problem with recent fast cpus affecting character movement in certain directions).
Note: I've tried a bit of the first level using dosbox and it seems to be fine after adjusting the dosbox mouse sensitivity, but there may be emulator bugs that could cause a problem later in the game.

First... In my first post I was trying to say that it crashed if I used the SHIFT key with another key. For some reason it stripped what I typed and I didn't catch it.
Second... I tried using DOSBox and it refused to run it 8(
I've downloaded some replacement drivers and am hoping that will fix the problem.

You almost certainly wrote <SHIFT>, which the forum will think is embedded HTML. To get around that you have to use the HTML entities for the less-than and greater-than signs (< and > respectively.)
Good luck with the driver update; let us know how it goes.

Yeah, that's what I originally typed. I'll have to remember that in the future. The new drivers didn't fix anything I'm afraid. Also, I'm not so sure that sound has anything to do with it. I "thought" I had tried with the sound turned off, but it seems I haven't. I went ahead and turned it off so I could play the game, and it did the same thing to me.

Ever thought about a "realmode-dosbox"?. A cheap buy at Ebay or elsewhere is a satisfying solution and a good investmestment for our beloved classic games, imho;)
