Hi,
I just got UU 1, and I can't get it to function because my high-end Win'98 machine hates EMS! Is there any way to get some EMS so I can enjoy this wonderful game?

Hi there,
The manual contains most everything you need to know to create a boot disc which you can use to run UUW. This should also ensure that you have enough upper memory to get sound (although this isn't as much of a problem as it is for UUW2)

If you're playing the game under a DOS box, then one solution I've heard is to boot with an empty config.sys as WIndows will load with 590k of free conventional memory and automatically emulates EMS memory. You should be able to run the game with that.

Create a shortcut to UW.EXE, in the properties/memory options, set EMS total to "2048". Works just fine.

If you go to the PCGamer website and check out their classic games cd site, there are instructions that will help with this problem.

uhh i know this post is kinda old but how do you do all that stuff. I mean I can't get it to run. How to you boot under a config.sys file?

Well, basicly what should be needed to run this game succesfully, are these/this line
in config.sys (config.sys is file placed in your computers C:\ - folder, i.e. root dir.
If it isn't there, just make one with notepad by making new file and saving it as config.sys in C:\ (make sure you don't have checkmark at "Hide file extensions from supported file types"))
Well, on to the contents of file then :
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF
FILES=50
The above is minimal that should be there,
note that new soundcards have usually SB emulation, which needs also EMM386.exe.
SB Live works usually fine even without this driver, provided you launch games via windows. Don't know the case with Aureal cards.
Anyway, following line will give you EMS memory support in DOS too:
"DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 8096 RAM I=B000-B7FF" (all between "'s comes in same line, and don't put "'s in config.sys)
Another file that determines how much memory you have is Autoexec.bat, also read automatically at bootup... Here is mine:
@ECHO OFF
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
SET PATH=C:\Windows;C:\Progra~1

Of course by now(five days later)I found out what to do but hey thanks anyways! What I did was just go into my windows folder and then find a shortcut called
"MS-DOS for games with ems and xms support"
After that it worked just fine. Of course i also had to download drivers for my mouse becasue I guess it was old but other than that it works fine
