If I've got a PC with a wifi modem and a PS3, can I use the former as a media server for the latter, or do I need any additional hardware? If I've got all the equipment I need, how easy/difficult is it to set up the PC (Win 7) as a media server?

Thanks for this. I've found a couple of these, but none of them seem to work so far - the PC shows up on my PS3, but when I try to connect to it I get a message saying that "Access to the media server is not allowed." Because of this I'd been wondering whether there was something small but obvious that I'd missed. (I'm also thinking whether it's the setup of my router that is the problem - it's set up for digital TV and has also been tricky whenever I tried to play multiplayer games on my Playstation.)

That looks like a good program, Brethren and may be easier than the alternatives.

Out of interest, did you use media player to share your library? On mine, I get the option whether to allow or deny devices from accessing the library and there's another option under "settings" to allow new devices automatically.
As far as the router is concerned, the biggest problem in the past is if both devices are using a wireless connection and client or AP isolation is turned on at the router. However, in that case you shouldn't even be able to detect the PC from your PS3.

I tried the Media Player thing, but while the PC shows up on the Playstation, the reverse doesn't seem to be true.
What is weird: in the setup window where you can tell Windows to share Pictures, Videos, Music and Printers (I think that's the four options), if I tick pics, videos and music and then save the changes, it changes them back to unticked or doesn't save them to begin with. Not sure whether that's a clue as to why it's not working.
Edit: Just tried out PS3 Media Server, and where TVersity failed, this one worked immediately. Yay!

Cool. Btw, even though "ps3" is in the title of the program, it works with the 360 as well.

I have a related question: we've got some DVDs that have close captioning rather than subtitles. Is there any way of playing those with CC on the PS3 via my PC/media server?

Does it do DVD subtitles? And why would you want to do this if you already have the DVDs?
On another note: PS3MS ftw! Why Sony haven't realised an official version of this type of thing is beyond me.

Some (especially US) DVDs only offer Close Captioning, for which you need a specially equipped TV that can show them. VLC Player can show them, but that means watching them on a computer, when it's just more comfy and fun to do so on the big-screen TV with the sound system turned on. That's why I was wondering whether there was any way of playing such DVDs on the PS3 via Media Server.
