Howdy all
WARNING : if you're not far in the game : this could be a spoiler !
I'm still playing Morrowind (the first RPG i've tried) and i'm still loving it ;)
I have the feeling that in the character generation, i skipped a quite important skill. The "illusion" skill is in my misc skills at level 9, and i have had many times where i wished i had a powerfull illusion skill. In sulipund i could have charmed the wizard in order to convince him to join. Instead, i had to abort the mission and wait untill i found some bug musk in Vivec on one of Caius's mission, now i had to try and stop an argonian in the thieves guild from illegaly offering training for magic skills. He says "no way", so i have to kill him, if i had frenzy humanoid i could make him attack me.
Now, after the lengthy intro, my question : is the illusion skill really usefull throughout the game? I think i should have made it at least a minor skill and train it like hell.

The illusion skill can be very useful indeed. It gives you some more options in dealing with people.
If you play a mage -type character and want to be more social than your average necromancer, than you could take illusion.
It's similar, although more temporary, to the speechcraft skill you would take if you were to play a bard/thief/conman-type.
The attribute personality is important for both of those skills.
But it depends on how you enjoy playing:
if you want to be able to avoid lots of combat and be able to charm your way around then you definitely should pick illusion and/or speechcraft.
but if you'd rather play a hard-as-steel fighter or a recluse-ish living necromancer, or whatever, than you'd be better of with some other skills; even though illusion would benefit you too, it wouldn' fit your role IMO.
So, from your question you should have picked it when creating the character.
That means either starting a new one, or training up the skill.

Playing a thief-ish something-or-other character myself, I don't have illusion particularly high. Nor do I have speechcraft (I'm a bit of a recluse, I'm afraid). BUT, I had no trouble either convincing the dude to join or the other one to stop training. Here's how:
Bribes, my friend, bribes! IIRC, it took a couple of 100 gp bribes each, not too expensive if you're playing a thief...
I think I was around level 8 when I did these quests, b/c I did all of Ajira's right off, so I got to these quickly.

I am a level 1 Norse Witchhunter and I both convinced the first person to pay the 2000 gold and the other to join the guild. All you have to do is admire them to above 75 it seems.
My speechcraft is not very high either. I have found that ever time you get the pursuasion to or so points above what you had it before do quicksave, then if you blow it you can go back.
As for the argonian I just took the second option (tell your guild leader he has stopped but then go back and get trained) I used the 1000 from the previous mission to raise my Illusion and Resotration by 5 pts each.
This is my 4th Char by the way. DONT INSTALL THE PATCH, it corrupted my exe and all my save files.
