You know, I could cure that cold with a jar full of leeches just as well. :p

While I realize Fett is joking, it's worth noting that (last year notwithstanding) colleges have incredibly low murder rates compared to the general population.
Colleges also have incredibly low population compared to the general population.
Possibly that may have something to do with it.

"Rate" means "% of total" ... and some of the highest murder rates are in smaller towns. So I don't think that answers much by itself.
I think the reason why it's low on colleges is because usually students don't have to worry about income or big life issues; if they get in at all, they usually have something paying for them, and aren't looking for or invested in settled things like a spouse or job. And who wants to mess up a paid vacation like college? It's just stress that cracks some, but I think workplace stress cracks more eggs than college.
Oh, and of course because drug dealers aren't getting in; and drug buyers aren't going to be the ones killing.

It's also interesting to note that if you shoot someone in self-defense in America, you
never shoot to wound. Shooting to wound, in legalese, means you didn't truly fear for your life, and thus were not justified in using lethal force, so you're hosed. =p
You should also always shoot to kill because then the asshole won't be around later to get a lawyer & sue you for hurting him while he wuz steelin ur stuff! If you're not willing to kill, then you shouldn't have a gun at all.
The_Raven on 22/2/2008 at 22:04
No, but a relative of the deceased could sue you saying that said person wasn't armed/didn't pose any imminent danger to you or anyone else. From my understanding, those are the legal restrictions placed on self-defence. I'm sure Starrfall, or someone else, will be around later to correct me if I'm wrong.

I could build the most lovely flowerbed on the hypercynical, half-formed horseshit you've been relentlessly coating this forum in since your arrival.
I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE YOU'RE FRIENDS WITH DETHTOLL

Maybe I'm just not interested in rainbow-colored fantasy worlds, mmkay? Maybe I don't mind seeing the world as it actually is, and not freaking out constantly and giving myself ulcers and neurosis from all the stress.

Peace is a myth. War is pretty much here to stay forever. And you should be glad, because even with war we're still making too many babies and not enough people are dying fast enough.
Plato said it quite well thousands of years ago, "Only the dead have seen an end to war."
"Peace" and "prosperity" that folks long for is a fallacy. There's a downside to everything, and the dramatic decrease in unnatural and premature death would be quite frankly terrifying. War, murder, plague, drought, natural disasters are all checks on the growth of the population. Without them, we'd be pretty well fucked.
You are scary. Seriously scary. Are you justifying war and murder with overpopulation? Uh oh.

Your problem right now is you have a good brain and you know it, but you haven't quite experienced enough of life to get over your teenage angst and self-absorption to come to the realization that one's perception of the world is a work in progress.
I, like you, once thought I knew everything. I bandied about HARD TALK because I saw the world as it ACTUALLY was.
Thank god I grew up.

So I'm an immature angsty teenager because I don't go all, "OMG OMG OMG *insert hyperventilating here* OMG OMG OMG!!!!" every time something remotely bad happens?
Nice logic there.
