Machine gun envy.
What if you feared for your life but figured you could take them once they were bleeding and floping around and stuff?

I don't think they'd buy that.

Really? Never. Do some more research, Tocky really needs to know the nitty gritty details.

I've had the opportunity to fire two different "machine guns" in my life.
There's really nothing else like it; as much of a gun nut as I am, it's the first time a gun has actually unnerved me. But at the same time it was a lot of fun.

No, big-bore revolvers are far worse on that. It wasn't the recoil that felt eerie. It was how fast it fired. How just tapping the trigger would shoot lots of bullets.
Of course that was also what made it fun. >>;

Unless you've got tons of money to burn it's pretty impractical to buy an SMG for shits and giggles at the range (among other impracticalities). Contrary to what you see in movies, most fully automatic weapons will empty a 30 round magazine in under two seconds. Even if you're firing an SMG that uses 9mm handgun ammo, you're still looking at spending around $10 every magazine.
I'll probably be buying an M4 for work in the near future but I can't afford to just spray my cash flow away for a few seconds of fun in the desert. Just see if your local ranges will let you rent something that interests you so you can get it out of your system. If you still want to own a firearm for sporting purposes (and not to show off to your CS buddies), you'll probably get more lasting enjoyment starting with something a little simpler.
