Overt displays of patriotism took off here after the Sep 11, 2001 attacks, as you might expect. Then it settled down. But now there's a wave of right nationalism sweeping the globe, and in the US they are wrapping themselves in the flag and trying to claim it as a symbol of their movement.

Same with the anti-gubmint Freedummys in Canada. If they are flying a Canadian flag on their truck and it's not some international sporting event, they are Frosted Fascist Flakes.
The DNC are mercilessly roasting Mango Man and his frail ego cannot staunch all the narcissistic injury, no matter how many grade-school nick-names he flings around. His self worth is bleeding out.

Thanks heywood. I suppose it was understandable then, but now it feels more like a game: who can outdo whom in spouting patriotic slogans. And the flag thing drives me nuts but I will try to be less irritated. Nationalism, on the other hand, is a dirty word in my world. Scary stuff.
I am happy to say that since my sister left mainland US, although she is still a trumpet and calls Trump her president, her FB page is no longer littered with trumpisms. Maybe we'll actually talk again one day.

we'll actually talk again'. Talking is a 2-way street. Also it has nothing to do with politics and there are no grudges. So put your mind at rest.
And yes, Nicker, the cliche is so true. As it happens, my family is emotionally very close though geographically far flung involving 3 continents. Which might be why we all get along.
I've watched quite a lot of speeches and stuff from the convention. I understand the roll call was quite a lot different from usual. And I'll usually watch an Obama speech, he's got such a great speaking voice.
