Even the babies shout "oi"? I like this country.

Risquit: probably something hilarious about dancing pom poofters then he'd ask me to come up and visit so we could get drunk and then he could knock me out. ;)
Yeah. Guy knew how to party.
And you people are making it seem as if you have to wear a welding helmet and blowtorch your way past the hordes of hell. Surely chainmail and a clever will suffice. The point I was trying to make with my snake post was that the whole world puts up with critters outside of that incubator Island you came from. We survive... mostleeeeeeee.

Glad to hear you're happy with Australia. Pregnancy makes your metabolism soar, and you're warm anyway; go with the A/C for your wife's sake. Also, I don't know how such heat affects infants with their small body mass. OTOH, a nice cool basement is good for staying comfortable too, if one of the big places has one.
With all these poisonous critters, I begin to wonder that Aussies don't carry a broom to sweep in front of them with every step; a bit like those dungeon adventures where a ten-foot pole saved you from the inevitable traps.
Yeah, we've gone for a place today (put in application for the lease anyway) on a lovely mod-conned but fairly spacious 2 bedroom unit very close to the trendy wanky district of the city that's packed with restauarants, cafes and Apple Stores (Fortitude Valley:
sounds like a salad dressing... but I'm not sure if I want to eat it... ;)) but it's actually in a little off-the-street bit where it's nice and quiet. It's actually only 13 weeks old, so it's brand spanking new, and it's got the ever-vital
AIR CON!! (

As for the critters, I find it remarkable that the sight of fairly big Golden Orbs does nothing to me now... and I was a fair arachnophobe in my youth. The only other thing I'm worried about now is how to keep the apartment clean enough to avoid hoardes of 'roaches and ants.
Anyway, thank fuck this week is over. I must have walked Brisbane twenty times over and my legs are killing me.

Nice location there Scots. Very pleasant part of the valley.
Was drinking just nearby for the work christmas party :D
edit: also, considering you are right in the area, be aware the Wickham is a gay bar ;)

Interesting to read of your progress scots. Recently I've been ruminating about New Zealand, but the sheer distance is a bit scary. Not too keen on leaving family too far behind...
Incidentally, considering venomous creatures again, how likely is it to actually get a nasty bite? I've heard that Funnelwebs will pretty much keep to themselves unless you step on one, although they can hide out in swimming pools by floating beneath the surface. For creatures they don't actually eat, a bite is more of a defense mechanism I suppose...

Actually, we humans and the other primates are the only animals affected by Funnel Web venom. But those fangs would be nasty, venom or no venom.

That's interesting, I wonder if Australia has any native primates that could have been a particular problem to the spiders; or if it's just bad luck.

Or the reason for marsupials?

That's not true, it's that primates are affected more than, say, cats or dogs. Probably some unfortunate coincidence with the chemical structure of our nervous system. Funnel Web venom works quite well against their prey.
