So I'm sure I need to start a new game (again), I think I already had to when upgrading from retail to 1.001. I haven't played in a while and I'm itching to get back into it. I felt that the spawn levels were a bit much and I did occasionally see spawns occur right in front my face, and that I may see that in 1.004 from what I've read. But other than that, can I expect a much better, smoother gameplay experience with this patch plus Bardak's fixes?
Any other recommended tweaks/mods to improve/balance gameplay that don't involve increasing the difficulty level or "realism" mods?

I upgraded from 1.0001 to 4 and have been playing the game for the last few days. So far the game has been far buggier for me now than before. For example the timer in the X16 PSI emitter room kept restarting, enemies frequently spawn in front of my face upon savegame loads. Hell, I even see a performance decrease, the total opposite to what I expected.

Ouch, maybe I should wait for the next update (or the expansion)
I've got Bioshock to keep me busy I suppose.
Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

I can only compare with 1.0003, which I think most of players liked. So far, along with bardak's patch for 1.0004 it's an improvement - some quests fixed, reputation stat fixed, stashes are fully fixed (a stash is used no more than once during the whole game, no loss of content, stash marks disappear from the map properly), speed-wise it runs _at least_ not worse than before (static lighting mode), some other things.

I'd say 1.0004 is an improvement as well. The only bad sides are really in the Army Warehouses map area, where it's become more crashy and one quest doesn't seem to work properly... Otherwise the world feels much more livelier and things Work Better in general.

Hmm, it looks like some of the problems I experience have been in the game since 1.0. It'd be unfair to blame 1.0004 for causing them. But I am disappointed that I don't get a performance increase like others, god knows why.

there is no real performance increase in STALKER.
I have a Core2Duo and noticed nothing. Shader optimizations is a lie, they are not in 1.0004. they wanted to include a Float32-version but its development cycles are too quick for them to keep track so they canned it.
I suggest getting the Float32 mod for improvements under dynamic lightning only. i played until x18 under patch 1.0004 and did not have any spawns happen infront of me until now. but then again, I don't do Quicksave/load that often.

I tried Float32, saw absolutely no framerate increase at all.

with improvement i meant visually. float32 had only speedups until version 1.5x, now it's getting more complex and we're back to old performance. but my pc can handle it well. atm i have installed:
stalker 1.0004 +
- 1.0004 patch fix
- sharper textures
- float32 1.778bRev D
- less generic bandits
- tons of Siro's weapons skins
and apart from now the extremly ridiculous dark shadows courtesy of float32 it's a beauty ! the darkness makes for interesting gameplay though.

Stalker looks fine the way it was from my point of view, I'd take performance over visual improvement any day.
