Keep in mind that your graphics card's VRAM also counts towards your 32bit OS total RAM limit
Ostriig.. I going to put this particular subject to bed, so people dont get the wrong info/confused..! In a contemporary PC the following is verbatim.
* Its irrelevent matter how much ram your gfx cad has, it is NOT counted towards the amount of system ram, the two are NOT connected.
* The only time system memory is affected by windows is when the total amount of system ram goes above 3.25GB's when use with a 32bit OS (windows Xp/Vista) - eg if like me you have 4GB's of ram installed you will only see 3.25GB, the remaining 750MB is taken by the PCI bus to allocate memory space for IO devices. The only reason why you wouldnt normally see this is because at below the 3.25GB mark the memory above that is held in virtual memory.
* The only time you would see video/gfx memory being shadowed, thus reducing the amount of system memory is on old ISA/VESA/AGP motherboards.

Oh... Crap, guess I bought into an urban myth then. Well, it's good to know at any rate.

I read his first post. I know he's not buying a motherboard NOW. I told him to get a decent video card he can put into his next system later on.

No point as his mobo wont support this CPU - I checked.
I agree.
If you read my reply I mentioned the E8400 in regards to a new MB option using an E8500.
With his current rig, for money invested in an CPU upgrade, it just doesn't justify the cost if he can put that money into/towards another computer which he hinted at.
If he wants to keep his current rig and still upgrade the best return for his investment would be GPU wise, not CPU.
If one looks at the E8500 CPU and DDR2, there are some bargains out there. The 6XXX series is just a tad to old now to consider as an upgrade option unless were talking a smoking deal on a new CPU which will work in his rig.
It all comes down to personal choice.
A newer high end GPU will more than likely be able to be used in his next build/computer. His options for using an E6700/X6800 with a newer build aren't there.
