Maybe if it has malware protection, I suppose? What firewall are you using?
I had serious problems with firewalls (specifically, Comodo Firewall) in Windows 7, including complete computer lockups. Never had issues in XP though, but I used Kerio back then.

That's a false positive, I've used that program myself (I "wrote" the English translation), and never had any issues. In XP, anyway. Doesn't work for me any more since I moved to Win7.

And the memory thing is also very unlikely, since I have an old laptop that runs XP and I'm sure it ran Thief 2 just fine on 512MB RAM (though it was 1.5GB now).

It's not impossible since XP noticably uses more RAM than win2k. When I built my machine five years ago, I did choose between 1GB and 2GB, but 2GB felt like overkill (and not worth the extra money) at the time. I never thought I would be using XP.

I'm using ZoneAlarm. I haven't noticed it causing any trouble. I can easily uninstall it just to see what happens, though.

One other thing I haven't tried is uninstalling some XP hotfixes that might be related (especially one of them which is DirectX-related). I do have vague memories that everything worked much better after I had just installed XP (before the updates started coming), but I could be wrong.

ZoneAlarm... yeah, that program and me didn't get along well, but more because of its interface and it not quite doing what I wanted than it actually causing anything bad to happen, IIRC. Basically, it kept alerting me about made-up connections, things like DromEd trying to connect to the Internet and other impossibilities. But, again, that was in Windows 7. I think it had something to do with IPv6.

It's true that my XP installs were never very up-to-date in terms of hotfixes, so I suppose there might be something there. But surely other people have fully up-to-date XPs without problems?

Disclaimer:
I'm thinking out aloud in this post.

Some new insights:
I can now get the Thief 2 exe to work in two different folders:
1. I try both the new and the old Thief 2 exe and they both work fine.
2. I reboot and the new exe has stopped working.
3. I now go into properties and toggle comp mode (if it's checked, I uncheck it and if it's unchecked, I check it and choose Windows 2000) for the new Thief 2 exe.
4. The new Thief 2 exe runs fine again. The old one runs fine without changes.

It's still strange, but it solves one of my problems and hopefully it's a stable formula.

The next step is to bring DromEd 2 into the above equation.

More insights:
The new DromEd 2 exe can be made to run by ~~choosing "Run as..." and then "current user", but uncheck "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity"~~ starting it normally. The old DromEd 2 exe can sometimes be run with the same method, but most of the time it requires to be run as admin.

* Running the new DromEd 2 exe seems to break the old Thief 2 exe.
* Running the old DromEd 2 exe breaks the old Thief 2 exe, but not the new Thief 2 exe.
* Rebooting breaks the new Thief 2 exe, but not the old Thief 2 exe.

Whenever a Thief 2 exe is broken I can try a number of things:
* ~~run it as current user and uncheck "Protect my computer..."~~ run it normally (se below)
* run it as admin
* toggle the comp mode
* rebooting and then sometimes also one of the above
The above fixes must be applied some way or another after every reboot and so far at least one of them has worked. I don't know of a way to make them permanent (yet). I also don't yet know if the behaviour is fully predictable.

One ~~conclusion~~ wild idea that could be ~~drawn~~ had is that DromEd 2 (and Thief 2?) or ddfix (or maxres) wants to write to some part of memory which is being protected by some process. This process could be DEP, but I (thought I) tried disabling that yesterday without solving the problem.

Edit:
Oh, and now the new DromEd 2 exe runs by simply double clicking it. That is probably the same as unchecking "Protect my computer...", though, but I must have forgotten to try it before.

That was once to help me remember which patches I had applied to which EXEs, but now it is also a way to make it run (the short name made it crash for some reason (this may have changed, though, but I saw no reason to go back)).

Now the same file can be opened all of a sudden.

About running out of memory:
A few days ago I did some work in DromEd 2 (while it was working) and processed the whole mission. The processing worked, but after a few times, it made DromEd 2 crash. The next time, I minimized all other windows and left the computer be while DromEd was processing and it never crashed once after that. I don't know, but it sounds like this could be because the system ran out of memory!?

Ahh, right, I have that installed too, I just forgot the name.

I suspect that your crashes aren't actually related to any of the things you're trying, they just happen to make it better coincidentally, and the human mind loves to see patterns where there aren't any. I remember a similar situation when trying to find what was causing a script module to crash, only to find it was something totally different.

You are probably right; I'm just treating the symptoms instead of the cause. Right now, none of the Thief 2 EXEs are working, but instead all the DromEd EXEs are, so now I have three folders with DromEd working for each, but no way of running a Thief 2 exe.

I uninstalled maxres and am going to work without it for a while. The strange thing is that the above situation started after I uninstalled maxres, but as you said, it's probably just a coincidence. I'll install maxres again later.

The only thing I have left trying is uninstalling related hotfixes, but I doubt it will do any difference. After that I am out of ideas.
