Unstable Thief 2 & DromEd 2! (solved)

I changed the title to a now more appropriate one. Thief 2 and especially DromEd 2 are very unstable. DromEd 2 crashes a lot for no apparent reason and won't always even start.

Right now Thief 2 and DromEd 2 are both working, but with some restrictions.

* Log out and then in again to reset everything.
* Start Thief 2 and everything works (menus, movies and missions).
* Quit Thief 2 and start DromEd 2 and everything works.
* Quit DromEd 2 and once again start Thief 2. Thief 2 will now crash when trying to load a mission.
* I now have to log out and in (rebooting has proven not to be necessary) to make Thief 2 work again.

This happens every time I try it. It's enough to start DromEd 2 in edit mode to break Thief 2.
DromEd 2 always works. When Thief 2 is broken it always crashes at the same exact point when trying to load a mission (I can look at the right meter in the loading area and if it passes a certain point, then I know the mission will load).

What could DromEd 2 be doing that breaks Thief 2? It must be something temporary, because it can be undone by logging out (and then in again). I'm guessing that DromEd writes something in memory that Thief 2 doesn't approve of!?

Another thing that happens is that when I copy the working folder, none of the EXEs in the new folder works: DromEd 2 doesn't even get into edit mode before crashing back to desktop (with the "Send report"/"Don't send report"-dialog). Trying to run the new EXEs breaks the old ones until the next logout and login. In win2k, I had at least 5 different Thief 2 folders working without conflicts.

A minor issue is that when successfully loading a mission in Thief 2, the view slowly drifts upwards and can only be stopped by pressing escape (entering menu mode) and escape again to get back to game mode.

The drifting view I can certainly live with, but not being able to have multiple Thief 2 folders will soon become a real hindrance and the need to log out and in will be annoying at best.

I have tried to uninstall all antispyware and antivirus software and even disabled XP's Data Execution Prevention, but it had no effect. Renaming folders or files doesn't work either.

More Info:
DromEd 2 needs to be run as admin to even start (I login to XP as a member of the administrators group). If I login as Administrator, I cannot run DromEd 2, but I can run Thief 2. No comp mode was needed for either Thief 2 or DromEd 2.

DromEd 2 was originally from The DromEd Toolkit before I patched it.

More info 3:
The somewhat working folder is on K: (same disk and partition as XP, but not under Program Files), not C:, if that matters.

More info 4:
I logged in as Administrator and installed Thief 2 via TafferPatcher, but Thief 2 didn't work any better there either - even worse. Thief 2 in the working folder stopped working for a while, but was reset by rebooting a couple of times.

More info 5:
I usually install all the latest XP hotfixes. Could any of them perhaps break Thief somehow?

More info 6:
I have tried to copy the working folder to the same disk, a separate disk and to a USB-stick, but the new folder always shows the same behaviour of breaking. I have tried to copy the working folder normally, copy it as an admin and by zipping it first and then unzipping it in the new location, but this made no difference.

More info 7:
When I try something new it might work for a while, but after a reboot it has stopped working.

Right now, the working folder is still working. When trying to copy the working folder, afterwards I have to delete the new folder, log out and in (sometimes even reboot), before the working folder starts working again.

When DromEd crashes, can you give the address information from the crash dump? It should be in the monolog.

DromEd 2 is not crashing, but rather makes Thief 2 crash, so there's not much of a monolog.txt to post.

I scanned for viruses overnight and none were found.

I'm continuing by scanning with a number of other antimalware-software. This will take a few days, though. If something is found, it may explain the random behaviour.

It's certainly bizarre. I think it must have something to do with a driver, a codec or some kind of system process (e.g. firewall, antivirus)... or a virus, I suppose.

I started by simply copying the working folder by drag&drop. Then I tried to run the DromEd in the new folder as admin ("Run as..."), which is usually needed. DromEd crashed immediately (no dromed windows was ever opened) with the "Send report"/"Don't send report"-dialog.

Bizarre. Nothing in there stands out.
AppMain doesn't say much, and the crash address is in generic function that copies bytes around in memory (memmove).

Hmm, you only have 1GB? I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

It's also very strange that you need to run it as an administrator - you shouldn't have to. I never had to run anything as Administrator (as opposed to being an administrator) in Windows XP... I don't even need to run DromEd as admin in Windows 7.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware reported d3dHook.dll from d3dWindower as a trojan. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware reported the same last year. I haven't used d3dWindower at all (so it shoulnd't be able to cause trouble, right?) and at TEG it is said to be a false positive.
