I'm never going to relate to people who draw arbitrary fanboy lines around franchises and declare hate for everything on the other side. I liked Unreal and I liked Half-Life and was glad to have experienced both. I'll always be more fond of HL1 than Unreal, but I don't feel the need to go around yelling that Unreal ran over my dog, my wife, and my remaining mental clarity.

Q3 rulz, UT sux
Disclaimer: This in no way reflects my real views on the subject. UT was actually very fun, and much better for single-player bot-matches out of the box than Q3. UT's CTF with the added teleporter was particularly fab. However, as a long-standing member of the Quake3World community, I feel obliged to represent with the age-old war cry.

It's hard to believe those blocky grafix once were blowing minds of those who were lucky enough to be able to run this game, I was one of them, it ran mostly fine on my 200mhz 32mb voodoo 2 12mb, but was choppy in some areas like Bluff Eversmoking, but I didn't like the gameplay much from the start, and the dark atmosphere was offputting too. I had to force myself to play it then, I could not be able to play it now. But that music... I been listening to this day.

Well, if
that's how little you cared about your dog, wife and remaining mental clarity...
... unless, of course, you keeping quiet is all part of a careful, long-term plan to get revenge on
Unreal, and going around yelling would just serve to draw attention to it.

I think Half-Life was the better game, but for me Unreal was the more cerebral experience. The atmosphere, the music, the varied environments, the mystical Nali culture - I was completely immersed in it.
However, overall I do think I've spent more time with Half-Life. There was a time when I played every decent single-player map or campaign that came out (I decided which ones I'd play by reading the reviews on a site called Hangar 17), and there were a lot more of those for Half-Life than for Unreal. I do have fond memories of Operation Na Pali. The levels and atmosphere were great, but in retrospect the humor was terrible and the voice acting was abysmal.

I like Unreal 1 more, but then I REALLY enjoyed Half-Life 1 as well. Plus Half-Life 1 had some fantastic singleplayer mods for it. They Hunger in particular.
For me, Unreal 1 has more love for it as I honestly find it quite beautiful looking even nowadays + the music, the exciting combat, the levels etc etc. Half-Life has some damn fine moments (eg the start with the reactor/portal, the first time you encounter the marines etc etc). Maybe it's nostalgia at work, but I just like Unreal 1 more. Half-Life has a huge amount of nostalgia factor as well. Unreal has the better alien environment though. I'd choose Na Pali over Xen any day :p. And Half-Life doesn't have the flak cannon. One of my most favorite weapons in a FPS. Deadly in multiplayer.

Well, that's all shot to pieces now isn't it. Tim Sweeney, I'll get you yet! :shakefist:

proof is in the pudding, I used to play both UT and Q3 in their glory days, both were excellent. However, Q3 is still played, but UT hasnt seen the light of day for a long while.

There is MEGA HARDCORE mod with little changed plot, new weapons, monsters, new secrets, 2 endings, boss battles and level-up system which is based on modified original Unreal campaign + some other maps.
(

Personally I liked that mod and beat it twice.
