An extensive review of both the original "Unreal" and it's expansion "Return to Na Pali" + some stuff on multiplayer. All done from a modern perspective and of how the game shapes up nowadays. Found it to be a good review. Unreal even today is an excellent game worthy of a play.

It's Na Pali. Getcher Hawaiian right, god dammit.

Bahumbug :p

Say it right, or don't say it at all.
I have to admit, this thread has got me hankering for some OG Unreal action. It's been many a year since I last played it.
edit: ...and here's Nyleve Falls remade in UE4. Needs more purple and orange in the sky, and maybe a more alien feel overall, but damn if it doesn't make you wish for an updated version of the original Unreal.

Thanks for posting the retrospective, icemann. I enjoyed watching it, brought back some fond memories.

That remake video isn't UE4. It's in the YouTube description. Shame - I already thought that the latest version of the engine was capable of quite amazing things...
Renzatic on 21/5/2018 at 21:13
Ah, my mistake. Should've read the description.
Though considering games like Witchfire, realtime engines can come dangerously close to replicating that.

The Nylevel's Falls music, gets me every time.
Sulphur on 22/5/2018 at 05:39
Yeah, most of that remake can be approximated in a current-day engine (minus the redonkyoulus polycount for the spaceship, probably). But the lighting's on another level, which it would be since they're probably using global illumination with enough light bounces to make GPUs cry. The current Frostbite engine is able to approximate the look of that sort of GI, but baked in and still not at that fidelity. We've a bit to go before we get there.

Yeah, it was mainly the lighting that made me go "Huh...?"
On the topic of Unreal, though: I must've tried playing this 2-3 times, but I never got very far, mainly because I just didn't enjoy the game much. I remember that first combat encounter with a Skaarj (is that what they were called?), but when I finally got around to playing Unreal, I'd already played and fallen in love with Half-Life, which worked much better for me than its main competitor at the time.
