My bachelors degree is 4 years, as are all the conservatoire ones in the UK as far as I know. And the masters I'm doing is a further 2. I'll end up with a BMus in June and a MMus eventually. They also offer an MA which is the same length but solely performance (no research element).

I just started a computing degree with the OU this year (39 and never even got my A levels let alone University, I was a bad boy, (read fool)) and they've got the distance learning down to a fine art.
Superb textbooks, monthly face to face tutorials, email and phone support and online classroom sessions with Elluminate which is one fine program.
Plus, because I live in Scotland it's free.
To qualify for free OU courses here you have to be earning less than £16,000 and have less than £16,000 in savings.

I can see why the academic establishments resisted it for so long though, being in a position as an employer of undergrads/grads in my current job - I hear "oh I can just download the notes" or "I don't attend the lectures" so often that I wonder how simplified the degree process has become and how much the average student actually
learns.
This is one of the reasons I love my school. You can't slack off and still expect to pass. You have to stay awake, you have to listen, and you have to come to class (or be willing to put a lot of extra study time in for what you miss). It pretty much forces you to be responsible.

As for the original topic, for some reason I'm reminded of (

Haha, I've heard that Maths has the highest suicide rate of all university degrees. And to make a measly contribution to the discussion, one can also do a four year degree BSc in the UK which includes a years placement.

I had really thorough handwritten notes on everything, which I had to throw out a while back. I foudn that much better than just having photocopied slides in lectures.
Our universities do bachelor's degrees in three years. It's apparently difficult to then go and do further study overseas, or get jobs, because everyone says "LOLWHAT?". Sometimes they might have a point.

I still have some notebooks from High School. One of them is filled with daily scribbles, pics, newspaper/movie mags excerts... It's not a notebook it's a work of art :p I still look at it sometimes, cool nostalgia.
The margins of my Uni papers are filled to the brim with System Shock fan mission audiolog drafts and map schematics. :cheeky:
