Having seen anime where the themes are at least as sophisticated as many live action shows I've seen, I wonder exactly why it is that in anglo-european culture we prefer live action.
I think it's just how our culture formed. Japan's culture formed with anime, ours formed instead with live action.
One of the things I like about anime is the realism of the animation. Even fantasy shows have great care put into them. Backgrounds are drawn well, sometimes CGI is masterfully used, etc. One of the best things is that the human characters are just that: human. In other words, they have normal-sized bodies, their hands always have five fingers, that sort of thing. I realize that this is (

Resurrecting a thread Koki raped and murdered and raped again, to recommend Monster, appropriately enough.
I'm only 4 episodes in but I'm already quite hooked. The buildup to the big reveal at the end of episode 4, even if I knew already who it was (reading the premise on TVTropes is what got me interested) is quite tense at times, despite only starting about halfway through the third episode.

Looked it up on ANN, sounds intriguing.
I finished the tenth episode of CANAAN yesterday and I must say that this is definitely one of the better series that I've seen. The cold, calculating Alphard, the sadistic Liang Ji, then indescribable Canaan...this is riveting, emotional stuff. Great recommendation, scumble. I hope it gets dubbed in English (and dubbed well, at that)
As an aside, I just discovered that Liang Ji VA is Rie Tanaka, the VA of Chii in Chobits. Talk about a personality swap. :wot:

As long as the thread is resurrected, I'll second the recommendation for Last Exile since I've been watching it lately. Very steam punk with WWI-ish styling and aerial battles, and a dash of mecha action. The CG sequences are very pretty. Suitable for pre-teens.
