Except music, books and "western" TV is made all over the world, by many culturally diverse countries. It is obvious it will come in all shapes and sizes. And age groups.
I'm pretty sure you'll be able to figure the rest of this argument out(and ignore it completely)
That is ever so slightly not the fucking point.

Okay, Koki, what about just cartoons made in the USA?
If you told someone they should watch Batman: The Animated Series, and they responded with "Nah. I saw a couple episodes of Powerpuff Girls once. That stuff's not for me," your first thought probably wouldn't be "Oh, well that's fair."
But that's not an unusual reaction when a fan of anime tries to get a non-fan to watch a show. "Dude, Cowboy Bebop is great!" "No thanks, I've seen DragonBall Z. Anime ain't my thing."

There are a lot of people that just like anime, ie anything that is anime they will watch.
There are a couple sides to that, though. I assume you're talking more about those who automatically like anything that is anime.
My tastes are so diverse that I'm willing to try just about any anime regardless of genre. But just because a show is an anime doesn't mean it gets a free pass; I judge what I see on its own merits.
That said, I have yet to find an anime that I completely disliked at the end, though Sonic X came disappointingly close.

Possibly it's an interesting experiment that's just gone wrong in the context of what Harui's strengths are.
It makes me wonder how the manga handled it and if people hated it as much then. As I said before,
I haven't finished the arc, so maybe there's a reason other than the title for them making 9 episodes of it that's explained at the end (although judging from your reaction, I doubt it), but if not, I think they would have done just as well with only three or four at the most. I have to admit though that it is a little fun watching the episode and trying to figure out what exactly it is that Haruhi still wants, although I have a guess.
As far as CANAAN, I'm hooked. All I saw was the first episode, and it grabbed me (even
before the secretary) to the point where I need to go back for more. It's gearing up to be something really good. Also cool was
Canaan's sensory action; it reminded me of that old Action Man CGI show from back in 2000.

I think you should compare with standard movies instead. Anime is about as varied as western movies.
Like "Nah I didn't like Highlander 2, so I don't think I'll like Donnie Darko/Pitch Black/Gremlins/The Dark Knight/Time Bandits".

Of course it wouldn't be fair. Because two people living in same state in USA can have bigger cultural differences than two people living on opposite ends of Japan. That was the whole point.

Akira, GitS, Cowboy Bebop - holy trinity of anime when giving examples why it doesn't suck. You'd think these would be top three at imdb with how much they're thrown around. No, seriously, it's uncanny: start arguing with anyone about anime, and you'll get any of these thrown at you faster than you can say "Cowboy Bebop wasn't even that good".
Then, with a smug on the face and feeling of overwhelming victory, they will go back to Naruto, FMA or Haruhi.
Incidentally, the very things you recommended in your first post here.
Briareos H on 27/8/2009 at 06:35
seriously now, what anime do you like kokes ?
Tonamel on 27/8/2009 at 09:33
I suppose I could have said Gankutsuo or Planettes instead of Bebop, but then the metaphor wouldn't have worked because nobody would have known what I was talking about.
And I didn't go back to Naruto, I went back to Bleach, thankyouverymuch.

It might help to consider that anime is really just "Japanese animation". I think the most important distinguishing feature of anime is that it takes the subject matter beyond what you'd normally see in a "western" cartoon. I'd compare Cowboy Bebop with Firefly in a number of respects, just as an illustration of similarity of themes.
I suppose in alnglo-european culture, or whatever you might call it, mainstream consumption of animation cuts off at an early age, and it's considered odd to enjoy "cartoons" after that. Having seen anime where the themes are at least as sophisticated as many live action shows I've seen, I wonder exactly why it is that in anglo-european culture we prefer live action. Maybe that's even true in Japan, but I think animation is much more widely accepted as adult entertainment.
Still, to be honest, I don't think I know enough to comment on the whole subject of the history of animation and where Japan is different.
