One of the things I liked so much about Haruhi is how bizarre it is. With that and Kyon's down-to-earth running commentary, I got hooked. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it in spite of the trope jokes.
Much of it is going over my head mind you. I think the episode where Haruhi gets Kyon to collect a heater while she gets Asahina to do daft things in front of the camera left me wondering what the point of the episode was, but I sensed there was more that I was supposed to be laughing at.
I think the favourite so far is the strategy game battle with the computer club, partly because of the choice of music.

CANAAN, eh? Never heard of it, but I'm intrigued by ANN's synopsis. I'll have to look that one up.
I was just browsing through (
http://www.crankitanime.com/) crankitanime.com's recent fansub postings. Canaan is (
http://www.crankitanime.com/anime-direct-downloads-h/8067-canaan-ongoing-series-english-subtitles.html) here. Files in HD quality but the subbing isn't the best I've seen. It's good sci-fi mystery thriller type stuff.

I wouldn't recommend this one for everyone, but lately I've been watching
The Glass Fleet. It's basically a civil war in space, with a setting that was inspired by romance novels set in pre-revolutionary France, and a bad guy who's a (
http://www.animefr.com/wp-content/uploads/glass-fleet1.jpg) dead ringer for David Bowie in
Labyrinth (right down to having differently colored eyes). At times it's epic, at others it's cheesy, sometimes it's both.
The regular animation is so-so, but it has some pretty CG stuff. Also the English dub doesn't do this particular show any favors, so it's better watched with subtitles.

That one lost me as well, though (

Of course, it
is a wiki, so pass the salt.
Sweet, thanks.

Well series 2 of Haruhi is doing my head in with this time loop story variant. It's like groundhog day on steriods. It's probably worse watching them back to back rather than every week, but dragging it out for 9 epsiodes seems a bit extreme. I feel like I've either missed something or the writers were just taking the piss. It might have worked better if they'd made the differences less subtle, and actually included some of the variations Nagato remembered.
Spoilers just in case...
Let me know what you think of CANAAN, Enchantermon

I never managed to get what was so special about Haruhi Suzumiya besides the crazy airing order. I have a deep contempt for anything anime-schoolgirl related and this hits in the pretending-to-be-parodic-yet-still-more-otaku-fan-service category of anime, which seems to be all the rage these days.

Well I wouldn't say I thought it was one of the best things I've seen so far. Series 2 is, as I've noted, somewhat annoying, and I've been surprisingly patient with it.
Ultimately anime is still a bit of a novelty for me so I'd have a different perspective if I'd seen more. I doubt I'd have watched a lot of high-school drama stuff once the fact that it was Japanese and culturally unfamiliar had worn off.

Sorry for the rambling scumble, it wasn't directed at you but a bit more general. I watched the first series, found it more or less enjoyable with some funny references to anime and even western culture (high point being Yuki giving the main character Dan Simmons' Hyperion) but I've seen so many people I consider "knowledgeable in the anime fandom" (urgh.) marvelling about how great the series were that I had to confusedly vent it out. I do get the references in haruhi suzumiya but I'm really not getting what all the fuss is about. For instance, I like the way Gainax work in their references better.

I don't like it when people gush over things in general, so I can see where you're coming from. I prefer to take things as they are rather than get into diehard fandom.

I've read one or two commentaries on the Endless Eight that try to salvage the whole concept,
commenting on differences in art direction for each repetition, framing and so on, but you can disappear down a hole trying to overanalyse. Possibly it's an interesting experiment that's just gone wrong in the context of what Harui's strengths are.

A lot of the people who go out of their way to say they only like some anime need to learn that that's perfectly normal. It's like saying you only like some music, or only some books, or only some Western TV shows.
Except music, books and "western" TV is made all over the world, by many culturally diverse countries. It is obvious it will come in all shapes and sizes. And age groups.
I'm pretty sure you'll be able to figure the rest of this argument out(and ignore it completely)
