You need to bump the bolded selection to the top of your list like post haste right now.
I'm not a super huge fan of anime. This isn't a look at me all being different because I'm olol too cool to watch jap cartoons type situation. It's just that out of every 10 I've tried to watch, only one or two have been worth half a damn to me. And of all ones I enjoyed, Last Exile struck me in a way most of the others didn't. There was just something undefinable grand about it that's usually lacking in most other anime shows I've seen. I can't recommend it enough.
Also I kinda like Fullmetal Alchemist for some weird ass reason. Specially the new series, which isn't nearly as teen angst whiny as it was before.
This. One of the most underrated anime's ever. I would suggest some too but they've either already been done or would just add to a pile that he'll never get to.

A lot of the people who go out of their way to say they only like some anime need to learn that that's perfectly normal. It's like saying you only like some music, or only some books, or only some Western TV shows. There's nothing wrong with finding 9 out of 10 anime shows distasteful, because that shit is basically a big part of Japanese TV and I'm sure there's quite a few Japs who look at some of the big name animes these days the way I look at shows like Lost.

There are a lot of people that just like anime, ie anything that is anime they will watch. Just like people who like movies. The type of people who defend the kingdom of the crystal skull.
Those people annoy me no matter what media they are defending.

And I may be the only person who hated the fuck out of the first Ghost in the Zzzzz movie and it pretty much soured me on watching anything remotely related to it.
The first two movies weren't all that great, I agree. But don't let that keep you away from the series, as it is set in a completely different continuity (same characters and universe, different events) and is
much better. Same goes for the GitS SAC: Solid State Society movie; as I mentioned before, it follows after the events of the second season and is, again, better than the first two movies (though some disagree).

And about Haruhi Suzumiya: It's basically a satire on the tropes of high school drama anime, and if you're not familiar with that kind of show then a lot of what they do will go over your head.
I think you're probably right there - but much of it seems funny just from the apparent strangeness of it, to me at least. Certainly the habit of making jokes involving breasts isn't absent. Also, the the out-of-order sequence of the episodes and crazy science-fiction elements add to the confusion...
I came across a current series called CANAAN that nobody has mentioned, but it has turned out to be quite interesting. Yet more humour derived from nudity and the bosom. I'll be surprised when I find some anime that gets by without this sort of thing...

D.Gray-man, a series I mentioned earlier, pushes aside nudity and breast jokes and turns out incredibly well (and quite humorous at times as well).

One of the things I liked so much about Haruhi is how bizarre it is. With that and Kyon's down-to-earth running commentary, I got hooked. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it in spite of the trope jokes.

Not sure how reliable the site is, but I've been using it to look things up.
I've found ANN to be quite reliable. I always check there for any anime info before hitting Google.

Looks like Aria is probably along those lines... well not mindless but ok for children to see.
Yeah, Aria's definitely a safe one for kids to see. There's one bathhouse episode, but I recall it being more conservative than what is usual for those kinds of episodes.
CANAAN, eh? Never heard of it, but I'm intrigued by ANN's synopsis. I'll have to look that one up.

Geass is also worth a mention, though I suggest watching up to the end of the second episode before you make a decision as it is far more representative of the series as a whole than the first.
and whatever you do, DON'T watch the second season.

Is there some reason for that bad advice? The second season was just fine, thank you.

If you don't mind something oldish, try getting your hands on the Crest/Banner of the Stars series. Space opera usually isn't my thing, but this series managed to get me hooked totally. I've blasted through the the first two season in the last two days, and am now working my way through the 3rd (Banner of the Stars II)

For what it's worth and since it's a namedropping thread, I really liked Now and Then, Here and There as a little-known series. I guess it would appeal to people more interested in character realism and morality than just your basic fantasy setting, so if that's your thing you'll find it really moving.
In no particular order, the latest anime I liked :
* The first series of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei : funny, random and witty, breaking-the-third-barrier reference-fest.
* Kara no Kyoukai sort-of-OAVs : As standard anime comes, you won't get any better than this right now. Perfectly animated, timed, characterized (well yeah, it's Type-Moon). Nothing really deep or moving, but good.
* Bounen no Xam'd series : Similar fare. Science-Fantasy setting with war, but with deeply endearing characters and an interesting take on what should be at the center of the show. There's a hint of Studio Ghibli in the design. This one is the most accessible of my list.
* If you're a hopeless romantic, Makoto Shinkai's Beyond the clouds (Kumo no mukou) and maybe his latest movie Five Centimeters per Second but I didn't find it as interesting. The guy did most of the work by himself.
