You're not alone. Champloo never did it for me either. Probably because of the deliberate anachronisms (I just hate that), and because the plot is completely predictable.
It's not a bad show, it's just not for me.

. . . and has two very good seasons.
And a really good movie.
Regarding the movies, btw, Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence are okay, but I didn't get into them as much as the two seasons. Ghost in the Shell SAC: Solid State Society (the movie that follows the second season of the show), however, was excellent.

I see that Gurren Lagann gets (

These are good, but you really, really won't want your kid watching them at all:
Gantz
Elfen Lied
Mnemosyne
Narutaru
A couple of those sound quite strange, but nevertheless interesting.
On the other hand, what might be good to watch with the kids? So far I've found that dark moments can pop up unexpectedly, possibly because I don't have a good guage on levels of extremeness that you might find - I like some things that are kid-safe but can't stand really mindless cartoons. Looks like Aria is probably along those lines... well not mindless but ok for children to see.
I'll put all this into a list, but the amount of stuff available is a bit overwhelming.
* Gurren Lagann
* Haruhi Suzumiya
* Outlaw Star
* Black Lagoon
* Ghost in the Shell
* Naruto
* Escaflowne
* Paranoia Agent
* Samurai Champloo
* Paprika
* Last Exile
* Metropolis
Will have to finish that off later and get back to work now...

I saw it, and I thought it was almost crap. Ghost in the Shell 2 was a lot better.

I've only heard of a few anime watchers who have seen TTGL and not liked it.

GaoGaiGar is on the level of Transformers, the main issue in watching it with your kid will be finding a version with english voices.

I found Gurren Lagann on one of the sites with links to streaming videos. What made me laugh in the (
http://www.umaianime.com/dumpvids-Tengen%20Toppa%20Gurren%20Lagann%2001%20English%20Subs.html) first episode (towards the end) is when Yoko says "What's this creature making himself comfortable in my breasts?". Possibly a quirk in the subtitles but it seems odd to be encountering boob jokes in an otherwise somewhat cutesy animation. Such is the experience of an anime n00b...

You have a lot to learn.

Just wait 'til you get to the full frontal!
Of the anime that you listed, the most kid-friendly stuff would be Outlaw Star, Naruto, and maybe Last Exile (I don't remember anything untoward in it, but it's been a while). It's true that dark moments can pop up at any time. Both Naruto and Trigun (and maybe Outlaw Star? It's been ages) start off kind of goofy fun and get progressively darker as the series continues. But then, so does Harry Potter, so that's not really a mark against them.
And about Haruhi Suzumiya: It's basically a satire on the tropes of high school drama anime, and if you're not familiar with that kind of show then a lot of what they do will go over your head.

For most of its history Japan never had much of a nudity taboo, particularly regarding breasts. Being naked was considered very peasant-like by the nobles (who could afford clothing, and lots of it), but otherwise no one thought much of it. It's only in recent decades that the western idea of Naked=Bad has started taking hold, so the standards are a lot looser. For example, the original
Mobile Suit Gundam has at least one scene with a naked adult chasing an uncooperative kid at bathtime, causing hilarity to ensue.
On the topic of
Outlaw Star and kid friendliness: One of the episodes is a trip to an (
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HotSpringsEpisode) onsen, and has some nudity. Just so you know.

As I've said before, though, I wasn't big in the knowledge of tropes and I still highly enjoyed Haruhi.
