I just found an old copy of Underworld I & II CD and I'm having trouble getting the sound to work on my computer. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming that you have your soundcard set up properly. Basically just clear as much out of the first 640k of memory you can. I've got both games and for quite a while I was only getting sound in UW1 but not UW2. Then after removing some TSRs that were taking up conventional memory I suddenly found that UW2 was playing sound. I have 552k of conventional memory free.
I'm running both games on a PIII 500 with a Soundblaster Live Value card without any problems at all. Mind you, you're not missing that much without the sound IMHO.

Call me crazy, but I liked the music and sounds of the UUW games. All this talk of mods makes me want to try and see if I can get them to run again on my PII.

I've had underworld 2 running on my K6-2 300 for ages now and I've never had any problems.
Unlike most olds games UW2 seems to have a performance cap on it that prevents it from running at blinding speeds.

I'm not saying that the sounds and music are bad in themselves, I just find that awfully tinny early 90s midi can get on my nerves after a while - whatever game it's in.

The first IBM PC games I played, I had to suffer with much worse sound (PC speaker

Yep, I too suffered with PC speaker only sounds for a while, I was absolutely stunned when I heard Wolfenstein 3D through my first Soundblaster. That said, I do find that some early games seem to implement the midi music better than others. Maybe it's my speakers but some games do hit notes that almost set my teeth on edge (Sim Ant & SimCity 2000 are two that do, I usually end up turning the music off). If I had smaller speakers it's possible that the effect would be reduced. Maybe I'll try my old set next time I fire up Underworld and see what the difference is like.

The Underworlds run fine on my computer. The sound effects are ok, but the music doesn't work. Oh well.

What sound card are you using, Ringwraith? Also, can sound work in the DOS shell of Windows 2000?
I am getting the urge to find my UW2 disks and install it..

I'd very much like to know what settings you are using to run the games (and what is in your system files, etc). I too have a P3-500 with an SB Live, and the sound won't work for me. 8(
