i got hold of the collection cd with both UW games but the installation only copies some config files and the games are totally played off the cd. my problem is that my 'super-speedy' cd makes quite the noise when i for example pull a lever just because it needs to fetch the sound(i hate this. only happens with older games). it's somewhat annoying, so i'm just wondering if anyone has some tip to get it to run from the harddrive???

One way is to copy the entire contents of the CD over to the hard drive making sure that you include the hidden files. Next, right click on every file now copied and change the properties from read only to archive. It takes some time, but this game was not originally intended to be run on CD so it should work.

If you can't see the system files due to options in Folder options, go to a dos box and for UW1 type:
XCOPY X:\UW C:\UW /E/S
XCOPY X:\UW2 C:\UW /E/S
For the above, replace the italiscized X with your cd-drive letter and the C: with whatever drive you want to copy the game to.

If you play with a bootdisk then you can usually avoid those annoying CD-reads as generic dos drivers for your cd-drive will read at slower speeds.

My version actually includes instructions for doing that in the manual.
All of the Underworlds, System Shock (1), and Terra Nova can be run directly from the hard drive, simply by copying the CD contents to the drive and installing from that directory.
