Have you tried finding the start point actor in the actor browser and adding it that way?

Yeah, but I have no idea where I'm supposed to find it at. I looked through all the really obvious entries, but didn't see one for startpoint.

From the word document "tutorial" stickied on the forum:

To play the map, you need to place a player start so that the game knows where to create the player.
1. Under “View” select “Show Actor Class Browser”
2. Find “Marker”->”Keypoint”->”Navigation Point”->”Player Start”, and select it.
3. Right-click on the map to place the Player Start in the room to the left. Don’t place it too close to the floor.
Worked for me...
It looks like you're following a generic UnrealEd tutorial, so you have to realise that some things will be different in T3ED, including how player start points are added...

Yep, that did it. I don't know why I had to do it like that this time, every other attempt it's always been in the context menu. Thanks for the help.

You sure it hasn't been popping up in that "Last Actor Placed" slot?

Oh yeah I guess that would probably explain it

I have another problem with a starting point - it won't change its direction. The teleporter points (i.e. the point where you begin when coming from the previous map) work great, but I can't rotate a starting point. No matter what I try to do, it always faces North.
