Guys, you may not agree with dethtoll's definitions but at least respect what he's trying to do. Defining survival horror is pretty difficult and its all good and well poo-pooing someone else's take on it but at least only do it if you have better ideas than "huurrr, you could include pokemon/pinball/my ear in that".
Saying that dethtoll's list is "arbitrary" isn't just wrong, it's stupid.

Damn, open-ended AND multiple endings? This is sounding better and better. The permadeath makes sense since they say it's only supposed to be a three hour experience, I guess the endings will give it replayability.
Yeah, that works for me. I really like the sound of the non-scripted emergent gameplay-approach to horror as well, and how weak your weapon is(you only get 2 shots, and they'll only disable the enemy if you hit the exact right spot).

The first thing I did after typing play was shit my pants.
Got the zero effort award.

What the hell are you even talking about? I really hate this business of "LOL YOU MISSED HIS SUPER-SECRET JOKE HE WAS JUST MESSING WITH YOU LOLLLLLLLLL." That's some Goldmoon Dawn shit. I took him at face value because FFS if everyone is speaking in code then nobody is saying anything meaningful. God dammit now I'm pissed off.
Sorry dethy my man, my post was more in the nature of a playful ruffling of the hair, it wasnt in anyway an attack on you or anything.

Eh, I didn't see my post as "lacking respect", as such. Blunt disagreement, sure, but I don't believe dethtoll is allergic to that.

I think that (
http://www.kongregate.com/games/briderider/fps-man) FPS-Man ticks off quite a few of the things on dethtoll's list but I'm still undecided as to whether it's truly Survival Horror. One thing it does have is great sound design - something that I've always found to be crucial for setting the right atmosphere.

Making up solitary definitions only works in monologues. In a multi directional communication context the definition is either quickly generally accepted or misses the goal of being useful for conversation about the actual subject.
Routine looks like an 80s comeback I can get behind. Neon coloured clothes not so much. :joke:

Noticeable lack of NPCs: ok, any game that makes you feel alone is probably not going to have a large supporting cast. On the other hand, it's possible to imagine a small group of people forced to co-operate but secretly plotting against each other and stabbing each other in the back. You can still induce feelings of isolation without actually being alone.
You could make a great game like that. Sorta like "the thing", only more crowded.
You're in a populated city where the monster you're hunting could be
anyone. It could be that NPC you just accepted a mission from. It could be the NPC you've been told to rescue. It could be both of them. It could be
all of them. O GOD IT'S* ALL OF THEM
It'd probably only work once, but taking a game that starts off feeling like a GTA clone and slowly making it descend into a nightmare scenario where EVERYTHING IS MONSTERS (maybe) could be awesome. 'Specially if your character is the only one who seems to notice anything's awry: "Are there monsters, or am I just mad?"

Bit late to the thread so here's my thought dump to start things off...
This was the first game I voted for on Greenlight. Definitely getting more and more excited each time more comes out about it. The overall style and atmosphere of the game look ridiculously good. As an artist/designer myself I can really appreciate what they have done here. It reminds me a lot of the movie Moon. If you haven't seen it, it's very well done. Go watch it.

I also love what appears to be the enemy choice. They aren't your typical 'maniacal genius human-like AI robots' that a lot of games like to use. Instead it looks more like they have less advanced AI and are much more mechanical with how they react to things. More HAL from 2001 and less Transformers. Different, much more plausible... I like it.
As far as permadeath goes, I'm not a fan of it. I would rather play a game from start to finish and have the story told to me cleanly than to have to play each part 60 times until I've memorized the whole thing. Wasting my time is not a useful game mechanic. I don't mind if it exists in the game, some people would love it I'm sure, but I hope there will be a way to turn it off. A decent checkpoint system would suffice, but those have been know to frustrate me as well sometimes.
I HATE the headbob. Developers like to tell themselves that it adds realism to the game, but it doesn't at all. In real life, our eyes/brain automatically stabilize what we are seeing. I don't think games that have headbob are unplayable... but I find the experience less enjoyable because of it and I turn it off whenever possible. Did anyone like shakey-cam in Cloverfield? No... same thing applies here.
The Oculus VR support is really cool. I can't think of a better game than this at the moment to utilize that technology. Immersion is key and what better way to do that than with a VR device? - I don't plan on investing in an Oculus any time soon, but if I did I would likely have to invest in a new pair of pants as well... (Pants would be shat, as per Vivian's post above.)
