I beat Umbra when I was level 12 Dark Elf. With Glass armor as a rating of 76. And a Daedric battle Axe. Pretty easy.;)

I killed Umbra by hopping up behind the rocks to the right of him (as you walk up the path to face him) and shot him with my longbow until he was about 25% health then dived on him with my Jinxblade.
(if you can't jump up over the rocks, a levitation spell would probably work as well)
Eventually, he was paralyzed so I hit him with my shock blade and silver longsword. Ocassionly switching back to the Jinx every 5 or so seconds, just to be sure.
At that stage, my Wood Elf custom (archer/thief-ish/wizard-ish) character was about level 12 or so. It took most of my ammo (80 or so steel arrows) and all of my shock blade charges .. and I 'exploited' the terrain. I wouldn't have had a chance going one-on-one with my weapons.
I haven't met anything that difficult to kill since.
Thanks to Umbra, the sword, my long blade skill is now 50-ish. It's a really nice sword, it has a handy 'power' too.
Cheers.

Speaking of Umbra, I was wondering something as well...
Having been playing Tribunal and taking advantage of the lovely new quest sorting system, does anyone know why the Umbra quest still shows as active in my journal, seeing as how I did in fact kill him? Was there something else I was supposed to do with him afterward?

Same thing happened to me; it's because I killed him without talking to him first, because it didn't even occur to me to strike up a conversation. If you talk to him first he asks you to kill him, then your journal updates when you've done so. If you attack him straight off (which I presume is what you did) the quest remains permanently active, as far as I can tell.

Ah, that must be it..
I think I did talk to him first the very first time I encountered him, and then he promptly slaughtered me several times over...
After several reloads, I think I finally tried the "attack him from afar before he speaks" tactic which eventually worked... so that probably explains it.
Thanks, Jordana, that had been bugging me. :)
