SPOILERS AHEAD:
Umbacano didn't turn up at Nenalata. The quest began on 21th and I was there on the 24th to find only the other adventurer (whose name I forget) in chameleon garb. He seems to be also waiting for Umbacano. I waited two more days in several fast waits but no sign of Umby. Went inside a couple of times to see if he was waiting inside but nothing.
Maybe the quest began early on 21th and maybe I got to the ruins late on 24th so it was more than 72 hours?
MMmmm.. maybe go back to his house?
Trouble is, on certain quests I like to travel on horseback and not just zap there. So by the time I get half way and have been attacked by so many beasts and bandits and killed them, I am so encumbered I have to fast travel back to the shops and to the mage to boost up my magic sword - twice had to do this so it did actually take me three days to get there! I actually saw Umbacano on the road but I was involved with a bandit and a guard at the time. Umbacano joined in the fun and while I was pillaging the dead bandit he bogged off, presumably to Nenalata. But he weren't there when I got there.
Other options: reload from an earlier save and go early.
If that other guy weren't camouflaged I'd take him on for what he done - maybe I will anyway. Maybe I will...

I suppose Umbacano might have died before he got there. That would suck. Where is your quest marker pointing?
Fidcal on 29/10/2008 at 06:57
Yes, I'm coming to that theory myself. My quest marker points to the entry of Netalana.
Yesterday I reloaded an earlier save and followed Umbacano at a discreet distance. I mentioned I came across him on the road so I picked it up from there. On the way he met with, as expected, a lot of attacks from beasts and the odd bandit or two which he dealt with fairly easily. Then he reached a hump backed bridge where there is a friendly encampment on the right. There was already a battle going on between two or three bandits and a couple of people from the encampment. Umbacano joined in. I tried to keep out of range by initially galloping around but one of the bandits killed my friggin' horse from under me while I was temporarily blocked for a few seconds at the bridge. Then I was running around trying to follow the action. Naturally I'm trying not to interact as that might affect the outcome of how Umbacano fared but in reality even my presence affects what happens. Sometime amongst the confusion I lost sight of Umbacano and never could find him again. In the end I whipped out my staff and blasted the marauders. No sign of Umbacano. Raced on to Netalana - no sign of him.
In an earlier reload I went to his house and his servant asked as usual if he wanted to see him upstairs and I said yes. He led me out the front door to the street. When I followed he went immediately back inside! I went upstairs but no sign of him.
It's my belief that because the first time I came across him on the road and he joined in a battle or two I and a guard were fighting against bandits and beasts that it affected the flow of events. Maybe he has only a limited amount of potions or spells to regenerate himself and they got used up on the journey. I suspect that if I had just fast travelled to Netalana in the first place he would only been incremented towards it safely without his interacting with any other AI. Although I had previously thought that these key characters like Captain Bird and that other Captain at Kvatch only fall unconscious temporarily and are immortal - at least temporarily during the key periods.
I'm probably going to reload from earlier still and fast travel either direct else just beyond and work back to Netalana.

well if that doesn't work, there's always a way of forcing quests to move on via console... but that's a last resort.
Fidcal on 5/11/2008 at 22:18
It did work thanks. I reloaded earlier and took him all the way.
I'm now getting more loot come in than I can spend so apart from houses I dunno what to spend it on.
This is despite getting ripped off by Merchants. They each have a max so even if you sell them an item worth 8000 they only give you say 800 - one tenth what it is worth. The best so far I've found has 1200 in Chorroll. Any better than that?
Brad Schoonmaker on 6/11/2008 at 03:41
Not out of the box, no. Once you get your Mercantile skill to master level, every shop suddenly has another 500 gold available and on top of that you can invest 500 more gold. You still get cheated, but my character has nearly 3 million gold so I don't even pick up loot to sell; only the unique items.
Fidcal on 6/11/2008 at 04:24
Mmm... I just passed my first 100,000 gold. Guess I'll have to rethink. Goes against my Thiefy instincts to leave stuff behind but if that money just accumulates then I too will start to focus just on the special items and avoid getting over-encumbered and having to make several trips.
BTW I lost my arena armour. Don't know if I accidentally sold it or what. I only ever played the first match. Any way to recover or get a replacement for that armour?
Brad Schoonmaker on 6/11/2008 at 07:07
Don't worry about getting money unless you have use for it. Like most or all RPG games, Oblivion saturates the player with far too many resources in order to fit most peoples' play styles.
The closet by Owyn (the guy who sets up the matches) has an infinite supply of raiments I read somewhere. The only armor from the arena worth anything, though, is the grand champion one.
Fidcal on 6/11/2008 at 09:04
You mean rob his closet? At the moment whenever I go to him to ask for a match he says when you're ready, I say I'm ready and he says "Call that ready? - you ain't even wearing your armour you useless maggot filth!" or somesuch.

I suppose at this point you could make it a challenge to try and set the
Oblivion record for the biggest loot pile. See how much stuff you can amass in one location before the game starts generating errors. Who knows, maybe you could fill one of your houses up to the ceiling with swag.
Hmmm... Maybe I'll start a new character and try that myself. Make a "miser" class character, collect everything and sell nothing. "Hey, from the top of my loot pile you can see Hammerfell!"
