Well, this sucks.
I went ahead and tried this quest, but like most, have had the problem of "as soon as I get into the barracks from the Old Way, a guard wakes up and attacks." Well, after that escapade I was able to (barely) take out the guards that had followed me. I went ahead to the Elder Scrolls Library, and no matter what I did, whether it be sneak or what, a monk would always end up yelling "Look out!" or something similar, and I would have no access to the scroll.
So after I run out looking for another way out, I run into some guards and decide to let them capture me. After all, if I can get some invisibility potions and the like, I can really do my best to sneak through and get the scroll!
Well, that is, until I realize how complicated this just became.
I can't unlock the main door in the Palace to get to the next floor. Well, okay, I'll just take the Old Way (again.) Except for the other little problem that shocked me: The door to the Imperial Barracks from the Old Way is locked now, and needs a key!
Long story short, I need to find a key to the Imperial Barracks. Where can I locate one?

I'm a firm believer in STFA and I found nothing that would help me. :( that topic doesn't answer my question sadly :(

I really can't be sure what you're doing wrong, as I had absolutely no trouble at all getting the scroll. Are you sure you're following the Grey Fox's instructions to the letter? He gave you a list of things that you absolutely cannot do inside the library (since you're pretended to be some woman).

try also raising your sneak skill b/c this mission requires a lot of it.

OK, its 1:30 am, did a quick search and found nothing..
Did the heist, killed lots of lich bastards.. pain in the ass. got scroll, i use the mod that allows recall, cause i like to overencumber myself.
Anyways, after i had the scroll i recalled out, only to learn that the quest wont update. it still wants me to escape the palace. SO, i cant get back in and im stuck.
Anyone have the concole command to update it so the gray fox returns ot the house in elvan gardens? I dont want to make the quest fully complete in console, just bump it ahead so it know i escaped.
Thanks!

I had the same problem as TSFroggy (I sneaked all the way to the elder scrolls library but when my character sits in the reading chair the attack music starts and my character and the blind monks don’t move even if I waited for 1:30 real world hours). I tried for more than 8 real world hours different solutions trying to avoid this problem but nothing seemed to work. I didn’t try to restart the mission because I saved just after I entered the library and I had no autosaves for my game only for my brother’s.
Just before I was about to give up, making my character detectable and running away from the place, I tried one last method so jumped from one bookshelf to another (the bookshelves to the left of the monk who is reading in a bench behind the reading chair, or to your character’s right, if it is in front of the monk) and I found three very useful scrolls in one of the shelves (not the elder ones but very useful still, also you can find this scrolls without leaping between bookshelves). One of them was a superior life detection, but the other two, shadow scrolls which give 50% chameleon effects, allowed me to complete this mission making my character completely undetectable (because 100% chameleon), so when I sat it in the chair the events happened as they should and the female monk brought me the elder scroll. I saved after I left the chair (to be sure my character wasn’t stuck in the chair) and I had no more troubles with the mission.
I can hardly believe I finished it and I hope this works well for anyone with this problem.

If you say that you always retried from the moment where you have already entered, could it be that you were somehow aknowledged by monks as an enemy when you did, and that caused further being ignored? Maybe you were not careful enough? When I first sneaked into the library and approached the sit the attack music started too. But I saved just before entering (as I always do cause you never know what expects you behind the closed doors) so next time I entered everything went fine.

If you really have problems, you could always it the tilde key, click the character in question, then type "tai". this will turn off their AI processing and basically make them a statue. Devious
