There is no official UW3. (And I doubt there ever will be) However there is Arx Fatalis, which rocks, and is kinda considered to be the spiritual UW3.

And when you've scarfed that down, wait eagerly for (
http://www.mightandmagic.com/uk/darkmessiah/teaser/) Dark Messiah. Arkane's next game, with help from Valve and ex-LG folks. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? :p
Download the gameplay videos and jump around with glee.

From what I've seen its completely unrelated to Might and Magic. I don't know why they're tagging that name on it instead of Arx or UUW which it DOES look to be related to.

Ownership, presumably. Arx were already working on "a game" in the source engine without a publisher. I guessed that they never announced it as Arx 2 because maybe Jowood own the Arx name. Along come Ubisoft with their newly acquired M&M franchise (the name, at least) and the deal's done - much to the chagrin of the M&M hardcore.
I don't care. Ultima Underworld was just "Underworld" before Origin came along. I'm a little sad that there doesn't look to be any rune-drawing, but other than that and the name, DM has got "Arx Fatalis 2" written all over it :D It might turn out to be more action-heavy, but with a sword-fighting system like that (and all the physics-playground possibilities) I don't mind a bit.

It's the closest thing to UW3 we've got.
There's even an easter egg: draw the runes U W (or possibly U U W? I had a really hard time getting this to trigger) and all the world textures will change to low-res Underworld-style textures.
I love the rune-drawing system; adds so much
urgency when you're fleeing from a pair of liches, trying desperately to draw Mega Spacium Movis before you reach the spike pit...

I understand reasons to not name it Arx... its slapping a totally unrelated franchise name on it that I have a problem with. There's only one reason I can think of to do that... to bilk a few extra bucks out of the unknowing M&M fans.
I won't be buying it for that reason and that reason only. I don't care whether its a great Arx sequel or not.

Well, that's your decision, but I think it's a backward attitude. Ultima Underworld came from exactly the same kind of origins, it was totally unlike the Ultima series, and it ended up being a fantastic complement to it and an all-time classic game in its own right.
Neither Ubisoft nor Arkane ever claimed that this was going to be a continuation of the main M&M series, they have been upfront about the fact that it is a spin-off and a totally different kind of game from the beginning - so the assertion that they're trying to "bilk a few extra bucks out of the unknowing M&M fans" is unfounded bullshit, I'm afraid. The only person you're sticking it to by not buying a good game is yourself. And maybe Arkane, if enough people are similarly deluded.
