In the early 90's when I purchased my first computer (used) it came with the game Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss. I did not however get any books, software or information to accompany that particular program. I would really like to get this game for my current computer and also get information regarding it. Is this game possibly downloadable from the internet? If so where? If not can it still be purchased anywhere? I really liked this game but it crashed the computer I had and I lost it a long time ago. Can anyone help me? :thumb:

The game isn't available for download on the 'net, because it still would be illegal. I bought my uw1 on ebay. I don't know for sure if it is part of the "Ultima Collection" collection that may be more available. There also is the "Ultima Underworld 1 Clue Book: Mysteries of the Abyss", but I didn't manage to get one yet. A demo of the first underworld level is available for download, though: (
http://www.stygianabyss.com/uw/decomorono/) at StygianAbyss.com.
The game can still be run on Win95/98 and (with a patch) on NT and 2000 operating systems (just be sure to give it at least 8192 kb EMS memory). Sound and speech may be a problem, depending on your soundcard.
And (just for advertising :cheeky: ) there also is the "Underworld Adventures", an open-source project that tries to recreate the game with a more modern look, using the original game files: (
http://uwadv.sourceforge.net/) Underworld Adventures home page (although it's in rather early stages).

oh how i would LOVE to play Ultima Underworld...but alas...i cannot stand the movement. When i press forward and it goes leftish it makes me cry. And it deciding not to go back in a fight is extremely fustrating. No but worse is having it suddenly go LEFT when running near the edge of a chasm. AHHHHHH Why! WHY!!!! I wish they fixed that. That's all i'd like someone to fix. Then perhaps i could play it too. :)

UW as I remember became freeware awhile back, so it's perfectly legal to download.
Not that it matters anyway, the companies can't make a dime off it anymore so you aren't hurting anyone.
The only thing you'd be doing is following a "technical" guideline which states you shouldn't have it.
Anyways, you can get it and several other old Ultima games at: (

here from the horses mouth
im running uw1 & 2 on win2000 + sp2
heres what you will need
(
http://www.sircabirus.com/ultimaunderworld/pages/)
go there to locate the exe hack that lets you run uw1 & 2 in a dos window
under win2k/xp
(
http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/)
go there to get vdmsound which emulates a sb16 in win2k/xp so all your dos
game will run fine :)
enjoy :)
pete
btw for the curious i managed to get uw1 & 2 running in a dos box in win2k
running in virtual pc running under mac os x on a g4 powerbook ti 800
& yes it ran fine ;)

I cannot believe that. Show me an official Origin or EA site where that is mentioned. Just because it was on a PC magazine CD, it doesn't make it legal to download it somewhere. Lucky you if you purchased it for virtually no price.

it is freeware, I got it on a PCGamer cd a while back

Just because PC Gamer got the rights to distribute the game on a coverdisk does NOT suddenly make it freeware.
Both Ultima Underworlds are currently protected by the IDSA Online Enforcement Program. It is not legal to download them, sorry.

Strange, I do remember hearing somewhere it was legal, but UW2 wasn't...
Perhaps I got my facts wrong, but i'm pretty sure..
