I don't know why, but some DOS games need to be started from a DOS prompt instead of Explorer's listing. When at the prompt, type UW.EXE and this should do it. If not, ???.

It's a simple safeguard mechanism.

I am having some similar problems running UW1. I got Uw1&2 on a cd-rom years ago. Sat on my shelf until just now. But I cannot get far before it crashes.
I first tried to run it in a W95 dos box. Got the sound running without any problems. But the first time I talk to anyone the program crashes with a "D012" error. Unfortunately, "D" errors are not listed in the documentation.
After that, I went to all the work to create a boot disk. I got it done, the sound still works. And the game crashes in the same place with the same error code. Bummer.
I am going to try removing the read-only attribute from all files as mentioned above. I did copy the game to my HD to get around the cd-rom drive hassle.
If that does not work, does anyone have any suggestions???

I've posted this several times before. Don't do a drag n drop copy of the files to your hard disk. Use the following command in a command prompt <br /><code>xcopy Z:\uw C:\uw /e/s</code><br />Replace the Z with whatever letter your CD drive is and C to a different drive if required.

i tried all of the above, but still can't get either underworld working with windows xp. i get a report of a resource problem. error code a006.
i have creafed a pif file, directing windows to set aside 8mb of ram for EMS memory and 600k free in base memory. i have gone through all options available to change the pif file, but still no game.
what on earth should i try now?
might be better to set up a new operating system on another partition. the joy of DOS 6.2

That problem is suppossedly caused by not having enough files allocated in config.sys. I don't have a copy of XP to play with, but its a possibility that you will have to edit system.ini to get the file count up to where you want it. The following quote is related to a method used for playing DOS games in WinME (by raising the file count):

Note for Windows ME users: Ultima<br /> 8 requires lots of "file handles", and will<br /> prompt you to put FILES=40 in your config.sys file. This<br /> is pretty hard to do in ME, as the operating system does<br /> not even read this file. There is a solution however -<br /> thanks to <a href="mailto:scratchy@pacifier.com">Scratchy<br /> Dragon</a> for bringing it to our notice:
<br /> </p><br /> <ol><br /> * Open Notepad; browse until you are looking in the<br /> C:\Windows folder.</li><br /> * Set Notepad to look for All Files; you are<br /> looking for a file called System. (MS-DOS name is<br /> System.ini). Open this file.</li><br /> * The file has various sections, including [boot]<br /> [keyboard] [boot.description]<br /> and [386enh]</li><br /> * In this [386enh] section type this<br /> entry:
<br />
PerVMFiles=40<br /> Save the file.</li><br /> * Reboot your machine. Windows ME now automatically<br /> allocates 40 extra file handles - more than<br /> enough - and Ultima 8 will be happy.</li><br /> [/list=a]<br /> <p align="left">The article that this is based on is <a<br /> href="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q269/0/30.ASP">here</a>.<br /> </p> <hr></blockquote><br />You need at least 20 or more files to play either UW games. You might also want to check out Microsofts site to see if they have a posted solution for XP. And don't forget to make a backup of system.ini before/if you make any changes.
