I think this is my first post in this particular forum. Now that I can run SS1 WITH sound I can probably run UU 1&2 properly.Should I copy my Gold Edition with both on it to the HD and DOS install from there like SS!? My main OS is Win '98SE but I boot to true DOS for SS1 and probably should do same for Stygian abyss.
Or would it be better to install in DOS or Win'95 install and use CD in drive to play?

Welcome to the Abyss. :)
Everything you stated should work. Although, don't install drivers for your CD-ROM. The games don't use it at all and you'll likely need all the conventional memory you can get. Otherwise, try it in Windows and let it handle the memory tweaking. It's been done. I've played the downloaded version this way, myself.
Also, strange as it seems, there is digital voice dialogue during the intro, but not during the end sequence of UW1. I spent a long time playing with the setup program trying to get it working. Duh.
Have fun. <IMG SRC="thumb.gif" border="0">
Oh, like in SS2, horde every piece of equipment you find. They degrade in effectiveness, but unlike in SS2, it's handled logically and acceptably.

Thanks; I've played #1 before but assorted crashes, formats, viruses, new hardware ,bad techguys, etc., usually make for no sound and now I should be able to try again.

Just don't neglect Shock 1 now that you have it running with sound. I want to read your diary of both games. :)

UU1 install didn't work; very few files appeared in folder from DOS install from CD copy to HD.Got message "file not found- C:\uw\cuts\*.n00", so I copied all UW1 files from CD copy folder and the game runs but no sound, as usual, no sound test function I can find.Backburner time so I can concentrate on SS1.Damn.

I don't know if this is the problem, but did you change the file properties of every file copied over to the hard drive from read-only to archive? This might explain no sound since the installer can't write the code into the .bat file to tell it which sound setup is being used.

Might be, but I did not have to do this with SS1.Will check.

Here's the proper sequence, see if you forgot anything...
Copy everything to the HD from the UW folder (and possible UW2 if you wanna play that too).
Turn off read only on everything.
Aside: Why does windows insist on adding a read-only tag? It was the medium that was read only, not the file. Dos doesn't have that problem <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Then run the install program and select your sound card (or what it emulates), plus the proper cutscene options.
Then run UWsound and tell it to select the right IRQ, DMA and Port for your sound card. UW defaults to IRQ 7, DMA 1 and Port 220. If that's not what your sound card is, that could be the problem (possibly).
And UW usually runs fine in windows, but if you have problems Dos is easy enough to do, provided you don't forget EMM386 (it needs EMS mem).

Hope that works; everything is happening at once on my end; it will be enough to get at SS1.

I am trying to run UW from Win98. I followed the directions above, changed the files all to archive, detected my sound settings etc. When I click on UW to play (from explore,) I go to the Origin Presents screen with sound and just stay there. Any help would be appreciated.
