I picked up a copy of Ultima IX Ascension a couple of weeks ago. I must say that it is one of the best RPG's I have ever played.
It truly feels original based on the gameplay in Ultima 8. I'm not just talking graphics here folks... I'm talking about the over-all part. Yes, some of the gameplay elements from the series are still there but there's alot more in it than that.
Since this is the last of the Avatar, what are they going to do about Underworld? I wouldn't mind if LGS uses the Ultima9 engine to make Underworld 3... I just want it made
damn it.
What are they going to do for the single-player Ultima fans out there, hmmmm? Origin seems to be killing their singleplayer gaming field (IMO) by making Ultima & Wing Commander multiplayer-only & a
Multiplayer-Only RPG just sounds way too stupid to think about right now.
I would really like to see Ultima X & Underworld 3 made right now, but I still haven't heard any news from LGS, Origin, EA or Richard Garriott on the matter. If anyone has any news on this... let us all know OK? Oh well... cheers anyway to Richard Garriott & LGS for making Ultima 9 & Underworld 1&2 so great.

Well considering that the roots of Role Playing Games were originally entirely multiplayer anyway (and still are, in the pen-and-paper world) I don't see a multiplayer-only RPG as being that grotesque an idea. Especially if it has corssover appeal into the pen-and-paper market like Neverwinter Nights does, which is essentially computer assistance and special effects for a human DM.

As far as Multiplayer-Only RPG's are concerned, Ultima Online sucked badly... & it was suppose to be a Multiplayer-Only RPG. I was nothing more than a big world with a Deathmatch once in a while (
or as UO'ers call them,
player killers).
The first RPG (
IMO) is Ultima 1 & Ultima1's graphics rate right up there with the first pong (
again,
IMO). That was singleplayer game, that's what I like (singleplayer RPG wise) & that's what I expect.
The best RPG (IMO) was
Dragon Warrior 1 on NES, it was made by a company called ENIX.
I can't see how you can have quests in a Multiplayer-Only game. It wouldn't be a quest at all... it would be just a Doom-like Deathmatch & not an RPG.
Most of the stuff I've done in Ultima IX don't need online play at all, so if Ultima IX were Multiplayer-Only... it would be a big waste of time. The only way I can think of adding multiplay in it would be to add Coop & that would still have singleplayer involvement & not totally Multiplayer-Only.
I still have yet to see a
TRUE RPG that is Multiplayer-Only & not a Modified version of Deathmatch with tons-o-glitter.

Come on... you guys gotta be kiddin' me?!
Nobody knows nothing about the next Ultima (I'm not talking about Ultima Online 1 or 2), Underworld 3 or the future of singleplayer gaming in the Ultima Universe.
Damn... sorry guys, but my hopes are too high again. Guess I gotta whip out the ol' Dragon Warrior & start playing until something comes along.

Haven't played Ultima IX yet. I'm going to wait until Origin have actually finished the game. Lacking a Voodoo card, I have been told that there's not much point buying it until the Direct3d is fixed.
Best Ultima game that I have played? Ultima VII definitely. Great plot, great interactivity. Great. Haven't played any before VI though, so I can't comment on the first 5

As far as I know, there is no such thing as "the future of singleplayer gaming in the Ultima Universe".
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif It has been stated quite bluntly that the Ultima titles of future will be multiplayer only. This probably also means that the chance of us seeing an UUW3 are pretty minimal but that doesn't stop me from hoping the game will see the light of ady sometime in the future.

Mr. Croft, I hate to be the one that tells you this, but Ultima 9 is not really a role playing game, it's an adventure game. You know, like Tomb Raider, only a flatter chest...

I've heard a long time ago that Richard Garriot wants to make Ultima X in virtual reality (but said maybe after UW 3 and UW 4...).
Now LG had closed, and programmer will probably dispatch on different projects.
The UW3 will probably be something like Arx (check it on (
http://www.arkane-studios.com)) www.arkane-studios.com) but the name may differ (license problem anyway).
Richard Garriot is not in origin ever more, but he had quitted with a secret project named Unext...
>Mr Croft don't you know that Ultima 0 was the first Ultima ? The first I've ever seen running was Ultima 2 (but it did not work properly). The first I've played was Ultima 3 !

Dangus: define a RPG, please. Oh what the heck, I'll just do that for you.
The base definition of a RPG is that of a game where you have a bunch of skills that can (and will) be improved.
However, what we acknowledge today as RPG is actually a combination of RPG, quest and action game (err... violence whatsoever). And I don't see where Ultima IX fails this definition. It's actually quite a very good RPG.
But I'll have to agree with CocoClown: Ultima VII is the best of the Ultima series; in fact, it's the best RPG I've ever played - actually, is the best GAME I've ever played !
Ultima VIII sucked IMO.
