Ugh, preformance. - by CandyStick

Well I just got the game ,after weeks of restraining my self, I loved the original Deus EX so I figured I'll play this one just for the story after hearing all the crap about it. Anyways, I just started and am so far fairly impresed by how the game is moving along, but there is one big gripe, the preformance. On my PNY Geforce 4 TI 4200 64 mb, the game runs like crap, I only go above 30 fps when looking at a wall or something, am seeing frames go low as 7 fps, and this is on medium settings and 1024x768. This seems very redicilus (am starting to think about geting a new video card) ,so is there anything I can do (i have the 1.1 patch instaled) or am I screwd:( . Also I have all the latest drivers for everything, 512 mb of PC 3200, and my Athlon 2500 is runing overclocked at 3200+ speed, so the preformance is quite shocking. Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Tweaking the shadows and lighting down helps a lot, if you haven't already. Other than that, cant say.

I just bit the bullet and played it at 640x480 with no bloom and no anti aliasing.
My LCD gives an anti aliasing like effect at that resolution anyway...
Not the way it should be played, I haven't played anything at 640x480 since the original Quake on my first Voodoo... mmm Gibberiffic :devil:

scglass... Uh you do realize that IW runs better with mutisampling right? Set it at 2x its another type of AA. If you want bloom its recommended you have a high end video card. Though your still going to have to play at 800x600 or lower it sounds like.
It should me mentioned on some configurations IW just plain runs like crap. Not much you can do. Best performance enhancers is to turn of all the visual 'goodies' of windows XP and perhaps a format and reinstall of the OS. Though I wouldn't guarantee anything.
scglass heh, and I should mention the poly count are about the same complexity of good old quake. heh. (
http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/) Some of the shots look better than IW.

Interesting... I'll have to check that, but I could have sworn multisampling tanked the framerate on my 4200 Ti.
I must be strange, for I'd much prefer to play at a lower resolution with full detail and shadows, than at a higher resolution with reduced detail and no shadows for the same frame rate...

You guys, how do you check the frame rate? What is the command or parameter? I really want to know. Thanks.
NightHawk2K2 on 25/2/2004 at 02:10
Thanks. I'll try that. Is there some way I can type a command line parameter in to a console, like "stat fps" for the Unreal Tournament series?

There is an in-built FPS counter that can be activated by enabling the debug menu. Which will require you to mess with .ini files. Quoted from the Ion Storm DX2 forum...
Quote:
Before doing this,please backup your dx2ui.ini and dx2menu.ini in your dxiw\system folder.Open up dx2menu.ini and scroll down to where it says cheat codes where it should say
Code:
[Cheats...]
{
[Player Movement...]
{
Now edit it so it should say
Code:
[Cheats...]
{
[Cheat Codes...]
{
<'Fly',Fly>
<'Ghost',Ghost>
<'Walk',Walk>
<'FPS', STAT FPS>
<'GOD PLAYER',GOD PLAYER>
<'INFINITEBIOENERGY', INFINITEBIOENERGY>
<'FULLBIOENERGY', FULLBIOENERGY>
<'INFINITEAMMO', INFINITEAMMO>
<'FULLAMMO', FULLAMMO>
<'FULLPLASMA', FULLPLASMA>
<'FULLMATTER', FULLMATTER>
<'OPENSESAME', OPENSESAME>
<'ALLBIOMODS', ALLBIOMODS>
<'SETBIOMODSLEVEL 3', SETBIOMODSLEVEL 3>
}
[Player Movement...]
{
That is just to edit the debug menu.Open your dx2ui.ini and scroll down to [DebugMenu].Edit it to say this:
Code:
[DebugMenu]
Active=ACTIVE
Type=Menu
Placement_X=RIGHT
Placement_Y=BOTTOM
PauseGame=False
AutoSizeWidth=True
AutoSizeHeight=True
TextColor_A=24
Color_Normal_A=0
TextShadowColor_A=0
SelectedColor_A=48
UnselectedColor_A=24
Font=font8
MenuDefinitionFile=DX2Menu.ini
ListenForMouseClicks=True
InputLayerName=DebugMenu
Now,save the 2 files,open the game,and load up a saved game.Press esc.Now move the mouse to the lower-right corner of the screen and click cheats then click cheat codes.Click on any cheat you want and enjoy!

The 1.2 patch which will be out in the next few weeks will improve performance by 20% (so its claimed), so just wait for that. Anyhow, 20% on an average of 20fps is still shit:p
