I'm infinitely curious: Why did he travel with an impossible to get temporary german passport, your passport and an invalid driving license?
edit: oh, well, I shouldn't make little naps while posting :D

But then he was also arrested and thrown into jail for 24 hours in Trieste for parking in the wrong place.
Life can definitely be tricky sometimes.
Italians laws are definitely on the weird side of things.

On the other hand, if you bring an entire city to a halt - even though it's not your fault - they might be entitled to be a little pissed off. :D Although, since this incident they now have 'No Parking' signs where before there were none!
And probably only in Italy can you barter the fine down from £10,000.00 to £10.00 and end up best mates with the police chief.
My apologies to shadows for veering off the subject.
Personally I reckon its perfectly possible to get yourself arrested for nothing very much anywhere. It's just that in some countries, it's much more difficult to extricate yourself.
