okay, so this topic is old, but i just got the game and wanted to say something.
about the performance of U9 - I have a P3-800, 128mb and geforce2, and it works really well(after applying patch, or the D3D wouldn't work at all). sure, i could use more ram, because that's about the only slowdown i get upon harddrive-access when entering towns and very intense areas... of that obvious reason i can't have viewing distance any further than middle... i run in 1024x768, 32-bit, without mip-map(don't you think it looks better without it?)
and the music is wonderful listening to wherever you are travelling.
about the game - i love it. i've just cleansed the 4th shrine which should make me about half-way through and i'm still very impressed by the environments. i mean, holy moses, is this land beautiful or WHAT in 3D!!? sure, i notice the gameplay is linear, and it will probably not be a game i run through twice in a row.(been playing for over a week - this game is enormous!!!). It's closest competitor lies in Zelda64 I think. They're very similar, so if you like an action/adventure of gigantic proportions and an epic feeling U9 is an essential purchase. If you want it to be an RPG, this isn't it, so i guess it doesn't live up to the hype set by fans of the series. I really love Undeworld2 too... i don't know, i like it in 3D. A LOT!
(i admit it has locked up once, and jumped back to windows twice, but it doesn't matter. It's addictive enough to compensate for this.)

I still haven't finished it yet as I havent had much time lately but I must say that I have been really enjoying it. Sure its got a hell of a lot of faults with it, including quite possibly the worst combat system and AI pathfinding skills of any modern game that I can think of. However it also one of the most beautiful games ever made. There are some tremendous moments in the game such as the mountain trail on the way to Wrong which really makes you feel like you've reached high altitude.

Ill definetly have more to say on this once Ive completed the game.

It's kind of a spoiler to say this, but you can get to the other side of the mountains north of Castle British by climbing them from the hedge maze area. It might ruin some plot points, though.

Okay, I have U9, and all I'll say is that U9 is veeeerrrryyy good IF you don't mind a linear RPG. other than the fact that it is very linear, its a good RPG: awesome graphics, good character development, excellent story, shall i go on

Yeah, you really do need to let that pass in order to enjoy the otherwise great game.

Wow... I'm surprized this thread has lived on this long!
I downloaded the unofficial Ultima9 patch version 1.19 recently & I notice a great improvement in gameplay. I wonder what it would look like with mipmapping turned off...
To those that haven't bought Ultima9 yet... get it, it's a good game. To those that that have bought it... buy Wizards&Warriors. It's just like playing Ultima Underworld all over again.

"unofficial patch 1.19" ????!!!!
Where did you find that? I'm really interested!

Heck, about a year ago I went back and first played Ultima 1-4. 5 was rather difficult and sorta punted me out of my Ultima kick. Still, 5 was pretty damn revolutionary though. Things like line of site. Day/Night cycle. Townspeople would go about there business: setting up shop, eating breakfast, going to home to bed every night. I thought 9 was a poor game apart from its bugs. Reminded me of that lovely game Daikatana.

I've finished the game twice.
I'm currently playing it a 3rd time.
First time I had 128MB of RAM. It was playable but slow.
Second time I had 256MB of RAM. It was nice.
Now, I've got 512MB of RAM and loadings are no more of a concern at all and it's my GeForce 256 DRR which is the new problem if I want to see veeeery faaaaar. :))
Anyway, this 3D environment really rules!
About the unofficial patch 1.19... It works fine.
The "too many items bug" seems to have been removed and it's nice to play without the CD (because it was very noisy in my drive but I DID buy the game: it's not a warez copy).
