U9 - should I bother getting it?

The bleeding thing crashed 1 mile from the pyramid while I was saving a game in progress and trashed all my saves. Then again I screwed the whole game up by killing the female mage at the bottom of the column she was guarding, so I couldn't learn an important spell.

I can't believe that it crashed all your saves. Have you tried to delete the file save/start.dat? Then run the game (you are waking up at home), run downstairs and take your journal, then load an earlier save game (no the one that crashed).

About killing your wyrmguard-friends, that's not a problem. You can kill them ALL... Although you can avoid to kill them (except 2: Geoffrey and an unknown Wyrmguard). The ONLY ONE that you shouldn't kill is Iolo because his bow+technique is very useful.

Well I thought that I should let you know that I finnaly went out and bought Ascension today. Well so far, so good. I have a P3 600Mhz with 256 ram and a TNT graphics blaster and the game runs fine. Ill let you know what I think of it when I've played a little more of it.

twisty, what's the clipping plane like on your machine? I played it on a 400 mHz PII w/ 128 megs RAM and it was too close, I thought. Islands seemed to just appear slowly out of nowhere when on the ocean. I have a movie file showing the gameplay and it was hardly noticable that the world was being drawn new at a certain distance.

I havent got to the ocean yet as Ive only just left after speaking with british for the first time. Ill let you know as I progress a little further. 

One thing that I want to know is "where the hell are all of the familiar faces?"

I have the clipping plane/fog line/etc maxed, as well as all the details. It's still too close. Maybe they figured no one would care to play it by the time über-PCs were available.

Well, I was only refering to the islands because there's supposed to be vast open areas between them. The land should be way off in the distance and gradually get closer, but on my machine it just shows up too quick out of nowhere. This happens inland, also, but less so.
As far as familiar faces, they're far and few between. Also, you may not even recognise them all.

Luckily the ascenscion game came with a complete ultima cd which has all of the Ultimas on them, including Aklabeth. I was thrilled. Ultima 6 looked quite good but the others just look far too dated to play now (though I could be wrong) and Ive only had a quick look at U1-U5 - if youve never played these before, I think that it would be hard to get into it these days. U7 Black gate and Serpent Isle are still two of my favourite games ever! If your interested in trying any of the Ultimas that you dont have yet, you can download them from someones site. Do a search here as it was posted up around about 2 months ago or so.

if youve never played these before, I think that it would be hard to get into it these days.

I play nethack so it look good to me
