I've been reading that you must have the editor installed into a separate directory (with T3 minus the content), and another install of T3. That makes two installs.
I don't plan on going back and re-playing T3 DS, so is this still necessary?

No, it wouldn't be necessary in that case unless you want a backup of the original files.
