If I were in your shoes, I would buy a used 42" 1080p Panasonic plasma TV on eBay. Plasmas and OLEDs tend to be better at rendering dark scenes, and in low light conditions (i.e. dark room), and don't have restricted viewing angles. In other words, good for Thief. Plasma TVs are dead in the market because Joe consumer values size, thinness, and brightness over picture quality. And OLEDs are only available in large, high end TVs. There are plenty of people who have gotten something bigger and are looking to unload their 42" Panny sets on eBay, so they can be found for <$200.
Saddly I think ur right .I just gave my panny 42" plasma away not realizing that tvs in some respects have not evolved but took a step back .Well am gonna carry on the hunt and let u guys know if i come across a winner :(

One more point. If you're going to use a TV for gaming, be careful to check response time & lag. It isn't as noticeable for console gaming as when you are using a mouse. Also, most new sets have some sort of motion interpolation which usually increases lag. For gaming it should be off.
Regarding the laptops, you can get laptops with premium screens meant for photo/graphics work such as the HP EliteBooks with DreamColor display, some Dell Studio, etc. They would look very nice with Thief but are very expensive. Clevo is an OEM who puts nice displays in some of their machines at a much cheaper price. These are marketed as Sager, Nexoc, Schenker and maybe some other brand names.
