I need a new turntable. No, it doesn't have to be "new" new. But I need a turntable other than the one I currently use.
Any suggestions?
I've heard good things about Technics, specifically the Sl-1200. Looking into it, however, I noticed it appears to cater to dj's. I am not a dj. I just want to listen to LPs.
I want to listen to LPs, and when the side is finished, have the arm return to its rest and the record stop moving. That's important; I don't want to wear down the needle if I fall asleep listening to an album.
So, what are some high quality automatic turntables? Or even semi-automatic? Is direct drive necessary for anything other than scratching? Do automatic turntables only work with belt-drives? Price isn't really an issue (well, I'd like to keep it around $500, if possible). I'm planning in the long-term here.

Although I cant help you in a technical fashion, I must say that vinyl will never be beaten by digital media. You get this great compressed analog sound that cant be duplicated. I have a huge vinyl collection, but for a long while didnt own a turntable. Last year I just went down to the local discount store, and picked up a full stereo unit for $199 with turntable! Not the greatest sound, but its decent, and now I can play all my records.
Man, I just love the feel of sliding that big black disc out of its plastic sleeve, then the slight hiss as the needle does its work, fucking brilliant.

It sounds quite good though I'm having a tough time getting some of these records clean and static-free. It's very dry out here at the moment, so I'm constantly having to remove little particles that get attracted by the charge.
For five hundred dollars you could surely pick up something quite good, but this probably isn't the forum to be asking. You need to talk to the guys who can hear the difference between a $10,000 cartridge and an $8000 one.

If you can't hear it there's not a lot of point. Although it is nice to go somewhere where you can at least hear them side by side.

No, I don't I'm afraid, it's in my closet till I can get it fixed. :( I never had the heart to get rid of it. Belt has slipped, probably needs a new needle. I know of a guy in Ft.Worth that can work on them. I miss it. *sigh* Still love the vinyl.
