When you hit the undead with it, it encourages them to run away for the duration of the spell. The likelihood of running away depends on the magnitude of the spell and the "morale" (for lack of a better word) of the individual undead. Useful for when you get attacked by an army of zombies.

What's the point? You will still have to fight them eventually. Is it just like for when you get mobbed?

Yeah, basically it stops you taking hits from them, so you can do whatever you want.
