That's a fascinating plan for community suicide you have there.

Let this place fade away gracefully instead of always making fizzled attempts at propping it back up again.
With all due respect, I think that ZylonBane is most certainly onto something here...

This might actually be a good focus for TTLG to revitalize itself going forward-- explicitly brand itself as not just a shrine to Looking Glass (a noble goal, but sadly destined to relegate TTLG to "museum" status), but also a haven for immersive sim action/adventure/RPG gaming. Kind of like an (
http://www.rpgcodex.net/) RPG Codex for people with hand-eye coordination.
I have watched all my favorite boards fade away one by one over the years, and TTLG is nowhere close to the demise they have shared. This place has plenty of life left in it.

twisty & van HellSing -
If we're stuck discussing popular games like Skyrim or Stalker in Gen Gaming, we'll end up with megathreads, curtailed discussion, and butthurt people. Game specific forums should be created based on how much discussion they are generating, not whether they are "worthy" (which nobody will ever agree on).
The one thing that relates all of the game specific forums is TTLG community interest. The Stalker forum has over 300 threads and nearly 10k posts because a lot of members think it's a great game and wanted to talk about it. People like it because the design and gameplay is somewhat similar to the core LGS games (Shock, Thief, DX). Same goes for Fallout. The Elder Scrolls games are extremely popular at TTLG because a lot of people who like Thief also happen to like medieval fantasy RPGs. If you want to pick an oddball, it's the Flight Unlimited forum, which has been around for 11 years and only has ~300 posts. I know TTLG has sort of an obligation to keep it around since it's an original LGS title, but there are plenty of other games which have been more deserving based on level of interest.

How can you kill something that's already dead? Let this place fade away gracefully instead of always making fizzled attempts at propping it back up again. Let it serve as a memorial site for a dead company and a tightly focused hangout for the few who still care enough to contribute. Dan and Saam created something to be proud of these 15 years, but surely they've moved on and nothing lasts forever. Nobody cares what an "immersive sim" is.
Your proposal doesn't let this place fade away gracefully, it kills it off. Besides, it wouldn't be a very good memorial for LGS if all of the LGS game forums except Thief get archived.
twisty on 4/6/2012 at 01:38
For very popular games, separate forums would be mandatory to avoid clutter and excessive megathreads. If we are to continue adding new games to our forums that in some way embody the spirit of LGS games then I suggest that a new category for topical games gets created and that forums are added there based on popularity (e.g. post count in the GG forums) and eligibility (IE, Diablo is popular but is not eligible). Any forum within the "topical" category (I'm not suggesting this as the actual name) will only remain there as long as it is generating sufficient activity, otherwise it will be archived.
I can think of quite a few games over the years that borrowed ideas from Deus Ex/Thief etc (VtMB come immediately to mind) and could have easily found a temporary home at TTLG.

Is it just my imagination, or does this thread never show up under "New Posts"?

ZB's suggestions all seem solid. What fresh hell am I living in?
ZylonBane on 4/6/2012 at 02:06
Don't worry, it's only an illusion created by nobody else making suggestions.

A VtM: Bloodlines forum would have been a good addition.
ZylonBane on 4/6/2012 at 02:33
Indeed. Great game. I even got somewhat involved in the modding scene for it.
Speaking of games that would be a good fit, it's kind of weird/funny how Bioshock, supposed heir to System Shock, was so categorically rejected by the TTLG community at large, not just the more vociferous members, ahem. After all the dust settled, I'd wager even Invisible War has more of a following here than Bioshock (if one judges by the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139302) near-zero interest in Bioshock Infinite).
heywood on 4/6/2012 at 02:56
You're right, but there may be enough interest to resurrect the Bioshock forum when we get closer to release.
It may have been dead anyway, but I think the bot is at least partly responsible for killing that forum.
