Curiously, this question popped into my head today. I remember when the forums were near in trouble once and there was that big DONATE campaign thing going on. Of course, I DO realize the donate button is there now permanently...
How much does it cost to run this place and where does most of the money come from to pay for it?

oh, I estimate approximately $5 billion per annum, and that's a conservative estimate, considering the increasing number of court cases this place has to fight off each year, due to wrongful banning.
But I think most of it is generated by GBM's highly efficient money laundering operation. I think he developed a special photoshop automated script to print money constantly or something. Then he sends them out to the other admins who very carefully work them into the economy throughout the world, so as not to arouse suspicion.
And just think, that money is being wasted right now right here with the prescence of this thread.

I'd be interested in how much the bandwidth costs them...

Thankfully the majority of our cash problems have gone away as we have moved from paid hosting to sitting on Saam's T1 line that his family business runs from. The plus side is that it doesn't cost anything really, but a downside is that we can't offer any downloads or anything really interesting (we constantly have cool ideas) as it would swamp the line in a nanosecond, and we're essentially guests, so we try to be polite!
Money from donations and adverts is used for a variety of things. A large chunk was used in the second quarter of 2004 to build a new server to replace the old one which has since died a death. We also purchased decent mail server software last year, which is another fairly large expense. We also purchase software upgrades and the like, to keep things like vBulletin up to date.
When there isn't enough cash for something then it is normally Saam who steps in and puts his hand in his own pocket to pay for bits and pieces.
Nobody benefits financially from TTLG, quite the opposite! And I think I'm going grey from server-releated stress! :o

And I thought you finance TTLG by selling abandonware :cheeky: Wasn't that the reason why you don't like link to free download sites ?

1. Abandonware cant be cashed upon.
2. Much of what people think is abandonware, actually isnt.
