It would be awesome if the Hub had:
* a page that has links and info for the thief/system shock/Deus Ex/etc sites and projects.:D
* A weekly article featuring an interview with a game developer/fm maker/ darkmod creator/etc would be good, too. This was tried once before for fm makers, but I don't know why it didn't continue.??
* A feature on getting older games to run on newer equipment.
* A weekly feature showing off or doing a review of a fm . It wouldn't necessarily have to be a new fm, just one that was chosen for the review because it had good gameplay, or some interesting feature. Pictures should be included, and spoilers too.
* It would also be nice to have a page of upcoming fan missions, as well as the threads on them:(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109278) first thread and (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94149) the second one
I like the sound of these, though again you would need someone interesting and dedicated to writing regular articles and hunting down information for them.
If you go this way with the hub, it might be a good idea to implement a filtering system so that a user can 'opt out' of certain types of news - someone might be interested in news on fan projects for the System Shock series, for example, but have absolutely no interest in the Thief series, so perhaps a feature to cater for them? (Or just shooting them for not liking Thief would work, too...)

Personally, I think the front page should be a rather simple and efficient link to the actual content, in this case the topics and the opinions. Maybe it can be formatted like Digg. I guess the tough part is how to add a flavor to it.
Anyway, I can't say that this is anything more than a casual observation, but it seems to me that the forums are what's carrying the TTLG network. People like to opine, and it seems this is a good place for it. I say that we present the selling point.

Because, everything will eventually end up on the internet (or our computers for that matter), I suggest we start on a small scale and gradually expand with a solid concept.
I ask this to the TTLG administrators:
What have you all done to come up with a clear path for TTLG?
(this does not include this discussion)
What are your visions, worries, and thoughts of the next evolution of TTLG?
Answer those questions, and we've begun the foundation for a newer, more attractive, yet original, TTLG.

The whole discussion is kinda backwards.
We have a page and are thinking up content for it, whereas the golden internet rule is that you need to have the content before you make a page.
Turn off the main hub for a while and if there ever was need for it people will come up and ask if this or that could be made "somehow more visible".
That's the moment where you can start to design a new front.
Also that gay shock soldier concept art has to go.

many people....may appreciate a front-end filtered by those of us who can condense information spread over a thread that lasts for a few days or a week.
I know I would. All the content I want and expect from this site is already here.
Somewhere....
I'm not sure there's much need for new content. One thing strikes me about these forums it's how busy everyone is most of the time with other things. Posting a couple of lines in a thread conceived by someone else on a coffee break is one thing. You start with the original concepts and content outside a general forum format and you create a beast with a thousand stomachs.
I say just play about with what's already here.

I have to say I rarely if ever look at the hub page, probably because it rarely seems to change
the main reason I come to ttlg is to touch base with the fan mission community, see whats new or in the works, find clues for why I'm stuck that sort of thing
I have to say if it weren't for the FM's for Thief I'd have given up on gaming altogether years ago .. and I'd probably have got more work done and been a lot wealthier
and I do agree with the points made about being elitist or a connoisseur when it comes to gaming, Thief hooked me and spoiled everything else for me at the same time, I judge most other games by Thief standards and usually find them wanting
so I want more of what I have
so how about reviews and interviews from the FM communities, there are unpaid, amateur authors producing mini masterpieces that can rival anything from the people who make and sell these games
I'd be more interested in that than say an interview with Warren Spector or news of the latest shoot 'em up, lets hear from the people who are keeping these rapidly approaching legacy status games, alive, give them the recognition they deserve outside the relatively small community they do their work in
for example pretty much everyone has heard of Mr Spector but only a handful know who uncadonego is and don has single handedly created virtually an entire CD full of extremely good games for the Thief engines, how many has Mr Spector actually made himself at the end of the day ?

Whilst that is a good idea, bear in mind that other visitors don't have much interest in fan missions of that sort. A part of the hub being given over to that, perhaps, but not the whole thing.
Esme on 15/5/2007 at 13:21
I didn't mean just for thief, sorry if I was giving that impression and I certainly didn't mean the entire hub
there's a lot of talent in these forums, I think it would benefit the forums as a whole to see this talent being appreciated a bit more, it might even encourage future developments or even get me to try a different game now and then especially if the reviews had some decent screenshots
without the FM's these games will die, there's only so many times you can play through a mission before you get bored with it after all, usually well before the game manufacturers decide they've made enough money from one game and decide to release another
the FM's keep these games alive, active and thriving but the people who develop them are almost unheard of
I think that needs changing
