Sadly, I have no true answers to supply this thread of a question. I did want to quote some of the posters' thoughts because I think they are pertinent to the topic.
Pardon me if this is kinda useless though. Maybe this will help focus some thoughts. You're all the reason I check TTLG everyday. I do want to say keep it rather simple whatever is done, and remember Fluke.

TTLG is primarily, at least to me, about a few core games; games that dictate or influence the introduction of other games.

What I really want to see is a CMS-ed version of the TTLG cookbook, Gingerbread Man's guide for homebrewers with pictures, random photoshopping contests, etc. all with a link to the corresponding topic on the forums.

I don't know how to describe what TTLG is more than something like "intelligent PC games that don't suck" either, but I do know that when I go looking for a new game to play, I can always rely on the opinions I get here to provide me with a good experience that fits my tastes.

Another thing is that in many ways, a hub is there to allow someone to go from one place to another. I have heard about and when I go to TTLG, I will see stuff on SS, Arx Fatalis, etc., but since I don't play them, I will probably never go to those forums. I may also be mistaken, but do people who play Thief, play Arx Fatalis? Do people who play SS, play Stalker?
Which by the way, I came for Morrowind and ended up in the SS2 forum for a while, now primarily stick to GenGaming.

Illumination. The main reason I come to the forums is all the stuff it highlights. I hear about games I wouldn't have, and even more so news stories/events I wouldn't have. I am exposed to views and arguements I haven't heard elsewhere and have assimilated many of them into my own belief structure, and THAT is the heart of good writing. When you're able to convince someone on the internet to change their mind about ANYTHING, that's damn impressive.

Beyondunreal's main page does pretty well doing just that, but given the large number of Unreal licensees and modders they don't have so much trouble tracking down regular news.

I'd love it if we decided to embrace the "snobbery" to be honest. And I don't even think "snobbery" is the mot juste. It's just that we seem to be more inclined to dig for gems than order cubic zirconium from Amazon. Or something. I'm not good at metaphors.
Let's call it Ge
mGaming then! :cheeky:
thank you, I'll be here all week...

Interesting discussion. I was thinking this place needs a freshness injection.
The front page makes TTLG look like it's full of game news (until you notice the dates), and is really focused on a few games. It's neither. Why not update it to say it how it is? That would be a start at least.

In response to the original Thread from Gingerbread Man, my input would be extremely biased, so I can't really offer much. I would like to see the sight cater to new "classic" games much like you already do. If Bioshock is a success, this should be the best site for it. I would like to see the overall layout of the site look like a pirate's cove and such. Looking Glass and Thief could hide out in the backroom of the site and run things. Just keep the newer fans/games happy and everyone wins. Think of the sheer amount of converts we could reap! :ebil:

I haven't read everything here, so I don't know if I'm being redundant. Anyway, here's my thoughts:
* The core of TTLG is the community, and the front page should reflect that in some way.
* The games we tend to latch onto seem to fall into a kind of "gaming futurism" category: Games that are clearly ahead of their time, either by proving the viability of a particular style of gameplay, or by eschewing the boundaries of traditional genres.
I don't know if there's a way to combine the two that would be compelling to outsiders (articles on various topics written by users, instead of just the admins?), but those are the things I find important.

I agree with Tonamel. Anything that is novel and is bringing something new to the gaming community, I want to know about, just like Thief brought stealth. I don't follow gaming at all anymore because I don't really care about the 1000th WWII FPS to hit the market. LGS bravely tested unknown waters, and I think thats the spirit that TTLG should reflect if anything.

I think that having links to news and things on the front page is fine as long as somebody is updating it. I would like to see articles on building PC's that are fast and still work with all three thief games, as well as other PC games. Maybe interviews with fan mission developers would be good. Links to review sites like Southquarter would be good, but that might just draw people away from TTLG. I do know that because there are really no updated news stories I rarely look at the main hub. I wonder when the Harry Potter websites will end up in the same boat.
